Don't be silly. My name isn't Claire.

My name isn't silly either.

Well good, I told you NOT to be silly!

I am serious. And don't call me Shirley

Getting an eBook reader has made me so much worse for this lol. I ended up trawling through a bunch of public domain book sites so now I'm permanently carrying around a ~700 book unread backlog.

Pair that with my Library’s Libby and I am completely overwhelmed.

[–] CrabAndBroom@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 month ago

Oh yeah I wasn't even thinking about that too!

[–] pruwybn@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Damn, you are not reading books at a rate never before possible.

[–] CrabAndBroom@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Not only that, you should see my Steam backlog and 4TB external drive full of downloaded movies!

Extended editions ! Director's cuts I'll watch someday ! Indie games I'll play anytime now ! and all this loot that'll surely come in handy during the endgame !

It really doesn’t help that over the last few years I’ve been getting all sorts of ebooks on sale thinking I’ll get to them eventually, they’re on sale so it’s not so bad, it’s fine… hundreds of books later.

[–] CrabAndBroom@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 month ago

Yeah I've been doing that too! Stupid Kobo store lol

What helped me was creating a smaller handful of books categorized as my current reads/immediate future. Collections on Kindle, but I’m sure other e-readers have some kind of tagging/grouping system.

I call it my “Bookshelf” collection and it’s my default view so I don’t lose track of in-progress books when I add new books to my Kindle, and I have to intentionally remove a book if I decide it’s a DNF rather than just forgetting about it.

One of my favorite stories to embarass my wife is about how I lent her a book after our second date. Dirk Gently, after I saw Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy on her shelf.

A decade later she still hasn't gotten more than two chapters into it. At this point she says she can't break her streak. Says that wanting my book back has kept me around this long and she's not about to ruin a good thing.

We'll gloss over all the other books I've bought her that I end up reading first.

[–] sanguinepar@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Oh man, she's missing out - Dirk Gently is great!

I don't owe you anything, books.

Next time try being more interesting.

[–] Frozengyro@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Sadly they are really interesting, but I read too much social media and pulp fiction.

The Once & The Future King has been sitting there taunting me for a few years now.

[–] Uebercomplicated@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 month ago

Lol same for me! Literally in view from my bed for about six years now...

[–] modestmeme@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I just finished a couple of books I got within a “few” years ago… I bought them when they first came out. Checked the copyright: 2014 on both… New Year’s resolution was no new books until the old ones are read.

Do what the fund managers do and set a % range for books unread in your library - no more than 30% no less than 20, perhaps

Cycle volumes in and out. Gotta close that loop. Then each year do a count to monitor growth and shelving needs

SORTED I'm Gordon ramsey

[–] individual@toast.ooo 1 points 1 month ago

no bc if I haven't finished it ; that means its not good.

[–] gmtom@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Nah if i start a book series i actually enojy it becomes a primal need for me and i consume it like an out of control house fire until theres no material left to burn and all i can do is sit there hollow and wanting until the next fire starts.

Books are meant to be ignored, partially read, whimpering as much as they are to be completely read, enjoyed and celebrated.
