A place to politely discuss the tools, technique and culture of photography.

This is not a good place to simply share cool photos/videos or promote your own work and projects, but rather a place to discuss photography as an art and post things that would be of interest to other photographers.

I've got a photo session coming up with a music band, not paid work just for a friend type thing. I've shot some portraits before but generally the subject knew what they were doing pose wise, in this case i'm not sure they will be, are there any resources or suggestions to research poses for a music band photo shoot (4 band members), photos could be used for promotional material or even album cover art?

If it matters the band is an indie/rock band.

I shoot bands and it really depends on the type of music and what their ethos is. You can go cool, moody, funny. So I would listen to their music and have a conversation with them about how they want to be portrayed. I do something totally different for metal vs soul bands. Then go find similar music and search their photos for some ideas.

I was reminded of this (shouty) video by Spectre Sound Studios about what not to do when photographing bands with several hilarious examples.

You can ask them for their influences, search them on the internet and see how they pose. Actually, it works a lot. Although, ask them what kind of photos they want and then try.. and try.. and try again.

There’s this band I listen to that used a pic of them walking across a crosswalk and everyone has shoes on except one guy. Seemed to work out for them🤷🏻‍♂️
