Tulum, Medellin, Cartagena, Rio...
Digital Nomads
Chad, South Sudan, Yemen
Virgin Islands, Sudan, Oman.
Brazil, Mexico, Turkey. In this order.
Since you know Spanish: Buenos Aires & CDMX. Medellín is also popular for DNs but I wasn’t a fan and don’t know if you’ll get much personal growth.
Honorable mention for Brazil (Rio is more fun but Sao Paolo is safer); depending on how good your Spanish is you might be able to pick up some Portuguese quite quickly.
Mexico then Thailand. The order is reversed today due to the shit exchange rate and increased cost of living. 2021 Mexico was much better than Thailand. YMMV
Interesting! Why did you like mexico better than thailand?
Vietnam.
I don’t need great internet so my faves are -
-
Laos - super chill, beautiful, Buddhist temples, lovely people and amazing food with a French influence.
-
Ethiopia. Addis abba is quite cosmopolitan, lovely people with great fashion sense, the Ethiopian landscape and light is so beautiful, you really feel like you’re in the cradle of humanity, it all just feels ancient. Food average. Friendly traveler scene because there aren’t too many tourists.
-
Indonesia - stunning scenery, genuine and kind people, language not too difficult to learn. Food can be mixed, not v healthy.

Ooh that sounds right up my alley!
Hanoi and Japan
If money is an issue, Thailand or Vietnam.
Even if money is not an issue, both are just as incredible
what did you like about vietnam? in asia now and debating on visiting there or the philippines next
OP are you open to Africa?
Kigali, Rwanda is a great place to live. It’s very safe and close to an unimaginable amount of nature. I’ve heard good things about Namibia and Botswana as well. If you don’t mind safety precautions (i.e. don’t be irresponsible) then South Africa is awesome too.
How’s the malaria situation in Kigali? Did you need to take anti-malarials?
I realized that no matter where I am in the world, I am still me.
Laos, Nepal, and New Zealand
I second Nepal! I didn’t put in in my list because internet is dreadful, but damn, what an amazing country! I spent almost a year there doing some volunteering.
I really like the cultural mix of Hinduism and Buddhism in Nepal, along with the magnificent scenery. There are destinations to explore at every level, from tropical to Alpine. Basic to modern conveniences. I spent a few weeks just walking around the Annapurna conservation area and staying in little villages.
I would include countries that I have had extensive stays but didn't live:
- Turkey
- Georgia (before British tourists started coming)
- Malta but not for life
- Portugal
- Lebanon
Thailand and Vietnam are easily my top two so far. But haven’t been to South America or Africa yet!
Peru, Bolivia <3
Spain, Thailand
Original, I know
Honorable mention goes to Japan but not for the long term
Colombia, Malaysia
Iran
Thailand, Brazil, Costa Rica (even though some prices in Costa rica are kinda intense, but okay )
Thailand and Vietnam
Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur then Rome/Madrid
switzerland very nice nature, good food pretty expensive tho but its soo clean and cute the people are a little cold until you get to know them better..
