Paolo Bachero is shooting 45% from 3 pt on 3 attempts per game and 66% from free throws at 6 attempts per game. How can you shoot 3 pointers like steph curry and free throws like ben simmons?

Could it be stage fright or that he freezes at the line.

[–] Nervous-Guava-7390@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

This is pretty much me in a nutshell

[–] siphillis@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The answer is most likely noise, but there's been a handful of great shooters who just can't operate at the line.

Clearly closer he gets to the rim the better he gets

  1. He's streaky
  2. Threes are often taken within a certain rhythm of the game while free throws are taken out of rhythm and in a high pressure context
  3. He's streaky ;-)

Kenrich Williams is shooting 62.5% from three this season and only 25% from the free throw line. This is partially due to a small sample size, but in 2021 he shot 44% from three and only 57% from the free throw line

Most likely the sample size isn’t high enough and his 3% will regress. In prospects and young players the ft% is usually the better measure of shooting touch and future projection as a shooter.

Because free throws are different than 3 pointers.

[–] JorElS06@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

His 3% will stabilize and his FT% will increase. His FT shooting was better last year

Repeat after me: small. Sample. Size.

[–] TdotSkunt@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Gary trent is a 38% 3pt and 55 ft lol

Sample size

[–] NudeEnjoyer@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

low sample size. saying "how is this possible?" you're acting like it's his career numbers lmao, it's possible because people are streaky

[–] i_am_the_senate_@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The similarities in his game to Julius Randle just keep increasing

[–] Sybilsthrowaway@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

sample variance mostly but he had a rep as a bad shooter and it means he gets decent shots more often than he probably should be getting. i think teams will adjust when they know his potential is 'a few percent near league average' not 'completely trash.'

[–] PureEn7ropy@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Free throws are too close, he needs to be further from the hoop.

[–] standouts@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Bruce Bowen the god of this anomaly.

[–] Lottapumpkins@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Artillery has a minimum effective range, and if you're inside of it, it's a shit show

[–] glizzyguzzler@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

outside of the flow of the game so it’s uncomfortable

[–] Baconmazing@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Jumpshot VS Standing shot is the most obvious guess. His shooting mechanics while flat footed are poor -- is my guess.

[–] FedjiSalleek@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I present to you : Anthony Hickey

College ball player in the 2010s

In his senior year, at some point in the season, he had a better 3pt percentage than ft percentage.

He finished 40% from 3 and 41% from the ft line

[–] timurjimmy@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

3 attempts per game is pretty low and it’s early in the season. He’s also not getting as favorable of a whistle as last year so far either. Anything below 4 or so really isn’t even stretching out the defense that much.

It’s part of the reason as for why I’m lower on the magic than most. None of their high usage guys this year have been efficient offensively and while that defense is most certainly legit you can’t have all of your best offensive players (outside of the Wagner bros) be below average TS% guys and sustain a great record.

Nobody is going to want to hear this since they’re a young team that is really fun and over performing at the moment but I think they miss the playoffs and end up tanking again after the deadline.

[–] TheBigBomma@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

This is a question of sample size. Especially if you’ve seen Banchero shoot. There will be a large regression coming at some point during the season

[–] solarscopez@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Law of averages is gonna come out of nowhere with the steel chair and barrel into his 3P% like an 18-wheeler.

[–] xowgl@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Usually these kinds of shooters never miss left/right but short/long they’re not as dialed in

[–] 420SMOKERGANG@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It’s called sample size

[–] popcrnshower@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Nerves, reduction in rhythm/momentum and psychology.

[–] fbdanzai@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

You meant shoot free throws like Lebron James

[–] coffee_black_7@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He’s only shot 44 3’s and 98 FT’s this year… the sample size is pretty small still and I’d wager these numbers are both not reflective of his actual shooting ability. They’ll probably make more sense as the season goes on.

[–] drblocktagon@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

volume and variance

[–] gabzlap22@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He’s got the Bruce Bowen effect. Man is a beast in 2k

[–] pupunoob@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

May I present to you, Bruce Bowen.

[–] graumet@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The frontal cortex is to blame. In split second physical actions, the frontal cortex doesn't have time to get involved. At the free throw line, there is plenty of time for the frontal cortex to do it's thing, and that's the exact opposite of what's needed to perform a practiced physical motion.

[–] AbsolutelyNob0dy@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

When you put all your attribute points into 3s and none into free throws 🤣

[–] tonyabalone@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He should shoot bank shot free throws

[–] by_yes_i_mean_no@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Shooting variance most likely.

[–] Xc0liber@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Bruce Bowen

[–] jtmackay@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He's not a very good shooter that happens to be hot on a small sample sIze?
