I'm primarily a football fan (specifically a Jets fan, yeah I know), and while I actually quite like basketball as a game, I had never gotten into the NBA. Now that there seems to be less than a snowball's chance in Hell of my Jets making it to the playoffs, it seems like the perfect time to start getting into the NBA season! My only dilemma is what team I should root for. I'm mainly deciding between the Knicks and the Nets, I tend to root for the NYC met area above all. That being said, I am completely open to suggestions of other teams, as if I can avoid it, I'd rather not get stuck behind another team as outright cursed as the Jets. So, members of r/nba, which team should I root for?

The Thunder are a good young team

I feel like the Nets are the more “Jets” team in NY. Unfortunately I think you know what I mean by that

Giants not so good this season tho

[–] twinberwolf@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Yea I didn’t really mean by record necessarily. I feel like the Giants are more popular and mainstream and the Jets are under the radar and a little incompetent.

I’m not super in tune to football so my understanding is about 4-5 years dated and I watch far more Western Conference games so I’m probably not the best person to listen to.

Root for the Nets. The team is stuck with Ben Simmons and needs all the support it can get.

Skip the Wizards, for your own sanity. Being a fan of this team isn’t for the feint of heart

Reminds me of every clipper fan from the 90s.

[–] StonkeyKong2021@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Hold out hope. I’m a kings fan and it only took 20 years to get back to respectable. It will happen

[–] ASAP_JAMS@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Your best bet is to really just watch different teams and see whose vibe and playstyle you like the best. Don't necessarily base it off who is the best or who is local.

Just start watching any matchups between teams at the top of their conference. You’ll find one you like. NBA is really easy to watch without following a specific team imo.

Going to go for a recommendation that isn't the Nets/Knicks since those seem like the most obvious

I tend to root for the NYC met area

There are 10 non-NYC teams that have at least one player who was born in NYC that is starting 10+ minutes a game this season: Cavs, Clippers, Pelicans, Heat, Magic, Pacers, Kings, Pistons, 76ers, and Spurs.

I'd rather not get stuck behind another team as outright cursed as the Jets

None of those teams are debatably as down bad as the Jets. But I'll use the Jets making it to the AFC Championship in 2011 as the benchmark.

Only the Clippers, Cavs, Pacers, Heat, and Spurs have been to a conference finals since 2011.

there seems to be less than a snowball's chance in Hell of my Jets making it to the playoffs

Purely off current betting odds. Vegas thinks the Clippers, Cavs, and Heat are going to be in the playoffs.

which team should I root for?

The Clippers so your friends that root for NY teams don't punk you for beating a NY guy that likes the Cavs/Heat

Watch games, see what team is the most exciting for you to follow. If it's a bandwagon team, then who cares? Don't let anyone trying to call you out take the joy of watching the NBA away from you.

Charlotte hornets

[–] BloodAffectionate486@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Choose a below average franchise, like the Knicks, so you don’t look like a bandwagoner

[–] Bldynails@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Watch the 76ers and realize that basketball is a waste of time

[–] wizardofweird@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

If it's between Knicks and Nets the choice should be easy

[–] mysteryman403@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Definitely the Celtics. Best franchise, best current team, top 3 head coach and a rising star in Jayson Tatum. In addition to that, the fans are great and inviting, and the city of Boston trumps every other city in the NBA!

Welcome, Harrison Bhakti, to the Boston Celtics fanbase !

Nets are the closest NBA equivalent to the Jets. Rn they're somewhere between rebuilding and trying to compete.

If I were you I would just watch for a couple of years and see which players/teams you naturally gravitate towards. That's what I'm doing with football rn.

Sonics, get in on the ground floor

i would definitely go for the nets in your case. i’m a big fan of two way players and there aren’t many who are better on both sides of the ball than mikal bridges plus he has a super upbeat personality and is one of my favorite players outside of the cavs.

[–] k1ngkoala@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Root for home team, if you don't find it fun or interesting then just watch players you like and root for their teams

[–] go_irish_1986@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

What was with the Hail Mary to end the half ? That just seemed like such a dumb idea 😅

[–] HarrisonBhakti@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Don't even get me started, I don't think I've ever yelled at my screen louder than when Miami somehow landed that 100 yd return without anybody stopping them.

[–] Weary_Concentrate_22@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Choose the Pistons, they are the worst team in the league but are very young, by the time they are good no one can tell you that you just jumped on the bandwagon.

Nets are easier if u have MSG, knicks games are televised on diff networks so it’s a pain in the ass. Nets are also the NJ team (moved in 2012), so if you’re NJ I’d say Nets, NY I’d go Knicks. Or if u don’t have cable/YES streaming maybe out of market (in which case pick whoever, doesn’t matter).

Lakers fan. You get to immediately see success for your team. Seeing LeBron play is a treat. I’ve been a fan since 2019 season and have always enjoyed Lakers games. We will also be competitive in the post LeBron era. Somebody will be will come to LA to play with AD.

[–] Xodia444@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Luka maybe? Or Ant?

[–] Major_Job_2498@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Root for the Knicks. History has always been a huge draw for me across sports (nerd). It's cool having a team with a rich history. I have family in NYC and Jersey too. Most of them are Knicks fans.
