Wanted a Nick Chubb Browns retro jersey. $170 on the NFL team shot website. Went to a Chinese knockoff site, I could’ve bought 7 different jerseys for $170. The price difference is just insane. How can they justify pricing a jersey at $170? Do people actually buy it?

Lmao such a great article. The best part is the author saying "check his early life on wikipedia" without saying it explicitly.

Excellent read. All the stuff I’ve ordered from the chargers shop is trash. Except the couple of Nike tees I’ve gotten for my kids.

[–] spinichdick@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Wow, I thought my issues with fanatics was a personal thing. Now that I think of it, my custom jersey from a tailor I ordered when stationed in Korea has held up about 100 washes, when the team store crap makes it like 20 at most.

Meanwhile the jersey you would have purchased from the NFL team shop is no longer made by Nike. It is made in a Chinese factory by Fanatics and is little better than a polyester shirt with screen pressed numbers. No stitches to be found at all.

Fanatics is the worst thing to ever happen to sports merchandise.

[–] EazyBreezee@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

So they’re made in a Chinese factory and just stick a made in Honduras or Guatemala label for funsies?

[–] FatherofCharles@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Fuck fanatics and their cheap, overpriced bullshit

[–] JamesJakes000@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

The fabrics used in their Tshirts is so bad, but like astonishingly bad. You can pick the cheapest, simplest cotton Tshirt anywhere, and the quality would be better. I bought a tshirt, supposedly dry fit, and after two washes, the neck is looser than my morals, and equally useless.

I collect baseball cards and hoo boy lemme tell you, our sub ain’t happy about Fanatics acquiring Topps last year

[–] Wooden_Gas8611@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I think it makes old cards more valuable

[–] KBnoSperm@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (5 children)

They’re coming for basketball cards too. I really don’t get how Fanatics is allowed to run what is essentially a monopoly on the sports merchandise and collectibles market

[–] Mattdodge666@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

And Football, Bryce and Stroud signed with Topps, and get full licensing in a couple of years. They're getting a full monopoly it's ridiculous.

Although Panini also deserved a kick in the ass for how garbage they've been all around lately when it comes to releasing sets on time, getting out redemptions etc.

[–] KBnoSperm@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

For sure, Panini’s quality went to shit in recent years. They just shouldn’t have exclusive licensing for sports cards. Removes any competition and motivation to provide a quality product and innovate

Whatever happened with fanatics taking over/ ripping off the panini deal?

Yep. The Patriots ProShop online website used to be run directly by the team, and the sales and merchandise selection was fantastic. Unfortunately they sold the online store to Fanatics a couple of years ago as they also own 99% of every other of the four league’s teams stores.

Thankfully I’m close enough to the stadium so I can actually just go the physical store still operated by the team if I wanted merch, but it still sucks having to go through Fanatics if I want something online.

A friend bought me a 39thirty cap from Fanatics and that thing was so poorly made it was hilarious. String sticking out, the bill seemed off-center and the best was the material they used in the entire back half of the hat was made with this stretchy material (years ago the 39thirty only had stretch in the band of the hat) so it formed a cone shape on the top like this. I made sure they got their money back; fuck Fanatics.

What I don’t understand is how people continue to purchase their products (including a lot of y’all on here).

Fanatics is fucking awful. I can pay good money for a shirt if I know that the quality is great. Fanatics is not that.

Chinese knockoffs it is

A crazier thing is the NHL not making adidas jerseys available to the public

[–] Sinnerandsmoke@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

What? I'm currently wearing an Adidas NHL jersey.

People absolutely buy them. I think a lot of it comes from gift giving and people buying them when they're at the game. If your spending close to $1k on tickets, food, lodging, travel whatever to go see your team play, $170 for a cool keep sake you get to keep forever isn't that much.

I agree its expensive but I still have every jersey I've ever bought or been given. I just gave a Terrell Davis jersey I got as a kid to my niece who is just getting into football.

Plus ebay exists. You can find tons of high quality jerseys for older players for under $50 and many for under $25. I'd rather do that than DH Gate, personally.

[–] Sinnerandsmoke@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (4 children)

If you care about quality at all I think and don't mind the players being a litter older, ebay is really your best friend. You can find high quality, stitched jerseys often for under $50.

Honestly for $170 you are getting a knock off quality jersey. The elites are cool but are about double the price.

That being said, I think a lot of people buy these when they attend games and want something to take home and keep forever. Personally, I would not buy a new standard jersey from the NFL because of the chasm between quality and price.

I also don't fuck with DH Gate because it confuses me and don't know how to tell who produces decent knock offs.

[–] jmarchese01@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (3 children)

I've ordered off DH gate a few times. All the jerseys I've gotten you wouldn't know are fake unless you were told. Their shipping is awful though. Takes like a month a half from purchasing until you actually receive it

[–] Pomp_in22@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (3 children)

I compared my DH gate and real jerseys and you couldn’t tell the difference unless you really looked.

I just buy a nice plain black shirt or hoodie with no branding or design on it. Super comfortable. Still rocking my teams colors. No fear of whoever is on my jersey to get traded or go crazy. It's a great catch all.

I haven't bought a jersey in like 20 years.

[–] lbrector@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (4 children)

Hey, if I was a Raider fan I wouldn’t wanna rock the logo either after the last 20 years.

FYI, As an Aussie; The Raiders logo is ‘stylish’ in stores around the country. You see people wearing Raiders apparel and you just know they have no idea what code it is or who any players are.

yep and hoodies and t-shirts come in other colors, like blue, red, green, teal, yellow, burgundy, purple, etc

[–] BabyLegRomeo@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Fanatics are exploited.

[–] _Bradzo_@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I have an adidas NHL jersey that cost $300 CAD and the quality is amazing, a fanatics one that cost $175 and a Chinese one that cost $40 and the Chinese one is better quality than fanatics, there’s a few minor flaws but at least one of the numbers wasn’t peeling off… it’s fuckin embarrassing

[–] psych4191@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I'm fully convinced the Fanatics shit is made in the same factory as the knockoffs at this point.

Knock off gear, ironically, is premium quality shit

[–] Ok_Card9080@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Got a knock off RGIII Washington jersey when he was a rookie, and a knock off Reggie Bush gold Saints jersey. Not exaggerating, they're the nicest NFL jerseys I have. Really nicely made

Oh wow, never realized the change (hadn't bought a new jersey since Mahomes).

Where would one find a good quality jersey these days then?

[–] gnashtyladdie@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago
[–] Any-Ball-1267@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I broke down and bought a Jaylen Waddle jersey at Hard Rock Stadium for around $150. Less than 2 years later the colors from the name/number etc is already starting to peel off. It's nice to wear on gameday, but I don't see myself ever buying another one.

[–] Tunatron_Prime@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Shoot us that link fammmmnn

[–] usernameisusername57@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (5 children)

I really don't see a scenario where I buy any official NFL gear ever again. Why would I pay 5x the price for an inferior product in order to support a multi-billion dollar corporation when I disagree with roughly 95% of the decisions they make? It's knockoffs or nothing for me from now on.

Honestly, I think it's getting back to the days of the late 2000s and early 2010s when people were buying a ton of knock off jerseys. What is interesting is what does the future of Fanatics look like? Their quality is so poor, that a lot of fans, from across the major sports leagues, are just looking for alternate options in order to avoid buying from them. How long until their profits start plummeting and the leagues boot them out the door? What Fanatics is doing is a recipe for disaster. As a card collector, what they've done to Topps is a travesty. Quality control essentially doesn't exist anymore, it's overproduced, it's overpriced, and the release dates are all over, where 2022 stuff was still coming out this summer.

[–] lone__wanderer__82@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I’m just done with it. Sold my collection of vapors on ebay last week.

[–] spinichdick@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Do it. Just do it with a visa gift card not your real CC. Funny thing is your quality from a knock off is going to be much better than the fan shop now. More people need to buy the knock offs to get improved quality from the real stuff.

[–] FirmGrape1@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Wifey and I are about to come from Aus to the US to our first game, I assume Walmart sells terrible quality jerseys? Was thinking about getting some there before the cowboys game and also the Dallas stars game we will go to..

[–] fecal_doodoo@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I got a couple of dh gate ones in the mail the other day, and I'm happy with em.

[–] Visual_Antelope_583@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Holy shit I did not realize they don’t sell stitched ones anymore wtf lol
