The box score should have defensive stats like number of attempted defensive contests in a game and number of successful defensive contests in a game. It’s hard to measure and reward defensive effort without such stats. When I look at a box score today, it’s largely biased towards the offense and doesn’t capture say a player’s effort who contested 10 shots in a game and only 2 of those successfully made it in. Comments?

The single most needed defensive stat that's missing is the block/steal, both events by the same player on the same play.

Because its just a Brook Lopez stat.
