He's also 6'10. I don't play basketball, but a 6'10 player who moves like a 6'3 player (Speed wise) seems pretty damn unstoppable. What the hell happened???

Mental & physical injuries

His back is fucked bro

[–] srgntalpowell@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Can’t shoot, confidence issues, back issues

[–] ThingsAreAfoot@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It’s those last two more than anything. For years he was a consistent 15-17 ppg scorer on good TS% despite having no 3 pt range (or any range) and being a terrible FT shooter.

That sort of player, who also runs the offense and is a strong defender, can absolutely have an impact despite a lack of shooting. And he proved it. But injuries and the rest have taken a toll, and certainly teams have also adapted.

ben never ran the offense. he was always useless in the half court

[–] Air4021@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It's somewhat of a mental health thing.

[–] whtge8@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Severe case of the yips

social anxiety

[–] ohheybuddysharon@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He got worse bc of mental health and back issues

[–] Overall_Win_9844@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Most likely a mental block. At this point it's looking unlikely that he plays at his true potential again

[–] syllabic@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago (2 children)

people expected him to learn to take jump shots but he just never did

if he wont ever shoot outside of layups and dunks that really limits how good he can be

[–] redpanda5890@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

That was alright for a while, the real problems started when he refused to drive for layups or even passing on open dunks (like the famous play in the playoffs against trae young)

[–] Bush_orchestrated911@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

if he wont ever shoot outside of layups

Or even those >.>

Shoots with the wrong hand

You used to be able to sleep in a crib…that’s much more difficult for you to do so now.

Sometimes people change and we’re not the same as we used to be.

ROY* (Spida)

I'm not even Simmons fan but the haters live in a weird fantasy land where they pretend he hasn't had injuries. Go on YouTube and watch some of his highest scoring games. He had no outside shot but was a talented paint scorer and excellent in transition. Injuries + a loss of confidence has put him in his current position.

Rookie of the Year winners sometimes don't turn out as expected. Ben Simmons in 2017-18, Malcolm Brogdon in 2016-17, Michael Carter-Williams in 2013-14, Tyreke Evans in 2009-10, Emeka Okafor in 2004-05, and Mike Miller in 2000-01 were all RotY winners, but didn't live up to the hype.

Simiiliarly, number one draft picks sometimes don't turn out as expected. Markelle Fultz in 2017, Ben Simmons in 2016, Anthony Bennett in 2013, and Kwame Brown in 2001 were all number one draft picks who, again, didn't live up to the hype.

A lot happened, but I actually have no clue what happened in the Hawks series and why he never was the same after that. Before that series (and I mean that regular season AND the series before against Brooklyn or Washington or some team like that) he was a top five defender who was good for 16/8/8. He was a bad free throw shooter but not an atrocious one. He was also never afraid to go to the line or attack the rim.

Since? I honestly don't know.

[–] melthevag@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

This is such bait lol

[–] Exciting_Compote_547@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He hasn’t made a shot outside of 12 feet in 3 years

[–] Head-Kiwi-9601@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

You don’t play basketball? Neither does Ben.

[–] MightOver8064@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Can’t shoot. Regularly gets sand in his vagina. Is a dickhead

[–] Gary5599@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Trae young happened to him

[–] AnyaTaylorBoyToy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Back injuries, never evolved as a half-court playmaker, didn't develop a jump shot, and confidence issues (i.e. passing up an easy dunk vs the Hawks, thinking he'd get fouled and have to shoot free throws).

It's a shame because he was very fun to watch early on, even with his weaknesses pre-injury.

[–] Plants_R_Cool@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He was good a few years ago. He's been hurt and mentally out of it for a while

[–] warablo@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

He's literally afraid to drive the ball now. That's his biggest issue.

[–] Dat_one_lad@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Big, agile, athletic, natural playmaker and everything made it so that he never had to develop either a jumoshot or the ability to self regulate. Then back injuries and his team trying to scapegoat him messed him up rlly bad. He's been OK recently I think

There’s more to being a pro athlete than physicality. Who knew

[–] TheJurassicPunk@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

cant shoot, nonstop injuries and mental issues.

[–] 3251harvey@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

If a baseball player hits a home run at their first at bat but strikes out every other at bat with the bases loaded and two outs and the team loses. Did he have a good game? That’s Ben Simmons.
