„We use end to end encryption but we kindly ask you to provide your full messages to our AI“.

Using AI to write personal messages also seems like the worst use of it.

Hey, didn't you read? It uses "Meta’s Private Processing technology"!!1!

[–] elvith@feddit.org 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

On Metas private servers, I assume?

[–] Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

No, in a very private part of the Cloud, so don't be afraid!

[–] vacuumflower@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 1 month ago

That near Florida?

[–] berty@feddit.org 2 points 1 month ago

Just like their automated, unencrypted chat backup that stores all unencrypted data to your google account.

[–] Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de 15 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Nice, another reason to not use WhatsApp...

[–] mereo@piefed.ca 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The problem will be to convince your friends and family to use Signal, and that's really not obvious.

[–] Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

That surprisingly wasn't that hard, actually.

One side of the family already settled on Threema for communication years ago, the other side I had to first show Signal to and help with installing it, but now they are even using it in other contexts.

And apparently I live in a bubble that is quite open to Signal, so most of the people I know at least use it in parallel to WhatsApp. And for the rest there is still RCS.

The actual hard part are (since I became a parent) all the WhatsApp groups that exist for most kinds of organized child activity, including distributing much of the crucial information regarding school.
Also at my wife's work WhatsApp is standard for coordinating with the colleagues.

For that purposes we use an old customized WhatsApp-only smartphone, that is used by the family like some old-fashioned fixed phone-terminal, only for messaging...

Why is this post getting down votes?

I get it's news you don't like, but it's still news people might want to know

[–] teft@piefed.social 9 points 1 month ago

No one will ever understand the whims of lemmy voting but generally anything that attempts to show ai in a good light but is obviously just a shill story is going to get downvoted. Even if it’s relevant to the community.

[–] MHLoppy@fedia.io 5 points 1 month ago

Anecdotally, quite a lot of users vote "selfishly" and don't care that downvoting reduces visibility. all and local feeds also fall victim to people voting as if these are their own personal curated feeds.

And I hate it 🫠

[–] pulpier@lemmy.world 2 points 4 weeks ago

Because most of those people are idiots.

[–] PrivacyDingus@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I often come here and think the same damn thing eh.

[–] Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Also:

original message: “Please don’t leave dirty socks on the sofa.” The AI then offers “funny” rewrites, such as: “Please don’t make the sofa a sock graveyard,” “Breaking news: Socks found chilling on the couch. Please move them,” and “Hey, sock ninja, the laundry basket is that way!”

Am I the only one that thinks the "funny" ones in the given example are much more offensive than the original one?

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 month ago

You are not

The original is fine as is.

[–] dumbass@leminal.space 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Bitch, I know what tone I'm using in texts, I don't need to retone "You got any weed for sale".

[–] PrivacyDingus@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

Clicking "funny/corporate"

"Hello, I’d like to schedule a consultation regarding your botanical solutions division. Please forward me the brochure on your finest… greenery."

[–] porksnort@slrpnk.net 5 points 1 month ago

Fun fact: you do not need permission to re-word your own texts if you realize upon re-reading it that one sounds like a snarky bitch.

[–] Sxan@piefed.zip 1 points 1 month ago

"Fuck you!"

Rephrase professionally

"I strongly disagree with your perspective."

so much better.

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip -1 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Whoever still uses this piece of shit software most likely doesn't care for privacy or anything else. Or just values their stubborn contacts more.

[–] buckrogers@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Yea, but if your kids participates in hobbies that share the info only via whatsapp, you can be the ignorant parent or the difficult parent or just go along…

[–] Engywuck@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Love how some people pretend to be special or unique here. And most likely just for fake karma points.

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Because I have an opinion? If I'd care for "karma" I'd be on reddit lol. But dude, go with the flow and consume the default. Couldn't care less about what you do.

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Luckily i got no kids with some weird hobbies that require WA. And if I'd be in that position, I would still not use it. I don't like to be extorted, even not for "just an app". Be part of the problem or the solution.

[–] Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

It's not just weird hobbies here, but basically all that are somehow organized.
Also a lot of relevant school information is only shared within parent groups on WhatsApp.
My complete WhatsApp-boycott lasted exactly until the first of my childs entered school... :-(

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 month ago

Crap that surely sucks ass. Luckily i avoided having kids, so that'll never be a problem. But that's the problem with that crap, so many just using it because others do. And hence help keeping crap afloat 😒

Tell me you’ve never been to the global south without telling me you’ve never been to the global south.

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I traveled to nearly every place on this planet. What does that have to do with WA and me being forced to use it?

[–] teft@piefed.social 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

If you’ve traveled extensively you’d know that entire countries depend on WhatsApp for communication. It’s free to use for many people as part of promotions with their cellular providers. Even government offices will use WhatsApp instead of sms. It’s going to be incredibly difficult to get them to switch. So you saying “whoever uses this piece of shit software doesn’t care about privacy or anything else” shows your ignorance. Some people don’t really have a choice due to their situation.

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip -1 points 4 weeks ago* (last edited 4 weeks ago)

As if I'd care or check what apps people use when I travel. I travel for places not humans. Also I still wouldn't care if everyone would use it. Then everyone couldn't contact me. Unless they manage to install another app.

So yes, I'm ignorant to bullshit. If you do it because "everyone does it", that is your problem. So how dare one uses a phone that isn't android or crapple or even not smart 😊

Also, even if you're "forced" to use it, my point is still valid. You don't care for privacy. You choose to omit it or just don't care. Unless someone forces you at gunpoint and it's either you or WA. Which probably happens nowhere.
