TIL the comic author is Jewish.

Kudos to her for managing a 24h candle with kiddos.

This may be a really dumb question, but why is there spam on the table? Not all Jewish people observe the no eating pork thing, but why specifically put it in the comic strip?

guessing that granddad wasn't Jewish and served in WWII, so the spam was what he ate in the trenches.

Maybe the husband is canonically a fan of SPAM? I dunno. Good question.

Is this a Jewish thing? I figured it was an early Dia del Muertos thing.

Various Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, Neopagan, Indigenous, and other traditional religious practices include lighting a memorial candle, and it's also done by some in a fully secular manner without religious attachments.
