Hopefully the powers that be realized that Pt Diff isn’t an adequate tie break in basketball as it is in futbol

No one should care this much about a made up gimmick
This would be a good argument if teams didn’t know about the point differential in the beginning lol
Win all your games next time
The suns are literally the counter argument to this. They played first and knew they needed to set a high differential….so they left Book in during garbage time to run up the score.
be at ease that the algorithim will give you favorable matchups in ur two regular season games next week.
Oh I like this as a consolation! Hadn't thought about that
Counter point: it is not easy to run up the score if the team actually cares as they can consider keep the spread low and eliminating the other team s consolation Victory. Also smart teams would be running up the score in the first games knowing they will get tougher matchups at the end.
Yeah this.
What team is willing to have their own players get completely wrecked on even if its garbage time. Yeah they might sub on a bunch of rookies but rookies are going to play hard just to prove it to coaches they're worth a spot on the roster.
Your team actually has to be good to win let alone be scoring 20+ point wins. If the magic were worried then maybe try building a bigger point differential
I really had t thought about the fact that the bulls had no reason to even theoretically care about point differential, that’s a good point
it's the 1st year, i'm sure they'll tweak it.
Every team play as hard and as long as they can. Problem solved
complete collapse
lose the 12 point lead
lose CP3 and GP2
you can't also lose the game after all that
That locker room is gonna suuuuuuuuck
Hence why the last games of the group stage in the FIFA World Cup are all played simultaneously.
This entire in-season tournament feels half-baked.
These should not count as regular season games. It should be a separate tournament, just like the Playoofs are separate from the Regular Season.
teams that play more back to backs have a structurally unfair schedule. we deal with it.
I think a Swiss-style tournament format would be insanely entertaining.
Or if Orlando has a problem with it they could have just won 4-0 like the Lakers and Pacers but if they’re not good enough to do so just say that?
so your team ddnt make the knock out stage huh
Yeah the tournament still needs to be refine. Nothing wrong with Celtics running up the score. But it does suck that the Magic missed out. The Celtics playing the Bulls the last match is also dumb. The Bulls clearly sucked and didn’t care, so the league had to fix that, like fine them, a lot of the other teams were competitive.
Growing up, I remember watching soccer tournaments with structures like this in that the top team in every group advances, but then some, but not all second place teams go through based on goal differential or something.
Those teams were called "lucky losers", not wildcards. When you look at it like that, every team blew their shot when they didn't win the group, only a couple lucky ones got given a second chance on tiebreakers. So yeah, it's unfair, but someone has to get lucky for it to work out.
I think the tournament structure is flawed for other reasons, but it's basically a single elimination tournament with a few dice rolls that let you survive a loss in the group stage. It just adds an element of luck to the single elimination format (which already has a huge element of luck), so I don't see that as a major issue.
In a real tournament this is true, but all these games are also regular season games so a team that’s out of the running isn’t just going to bend over and play their reserves, they still want to win because it’s a regular season game.
A fringe playoff/play-in team isn’t just going to lose a game and act like it’s not a big deal.
it’s in the past now. let’s play that song and move on
The Magic were up 8 points on the Celtics with 2 minutes left in the game and ended up winning by 17. This isn't an instance where the Magic were this dominant team and just took their foot off the gas at the end. They were literally down by 12 points in the 3rd quarter until Porzingis went down and the Celtics completely fell apart.
I kind-of agree with your sentiment, but even in this case, a team like the Celtics - who were the #1 seed in the group when the groups were created - at least deserve 'last chance' because they earned that privilege.
While you have a point, group C also proved the exact opposite.
Let's ignore the fact Orlando pushed their point differential to the max the game b4 against the Celtics. And let's pretend Celtics lost to the Bulls.
The premise to your argument is that the Nets would then easily beat Toronto by more than 14 and finish 1st.
The Nets tried. And failed. They beat Toronto only by 12.
What Group C proved to us on the last night was that while 2 teams were racing for point differential against the resting team, one succeeded, but the other failed.
The lesson learned for future seasons is that teams got to play all 4 group games for points and not leave it to their last game.
If the team is disciplined enough to do it all 4 games, it's no longer unfair, regardless of whether it resting the last round
You assume these teams can get whatever differential they need, you know there is another team actively working to not let them run up the score right?
Silly silly take
