This is the same lady who called for a national divorce a few weeks ago, right?

Don't forget Jewish space lasers. In any case, if her vote helps restore some sanity to government I welcome it. I still think she's a garbage person, but whatever it takes to get the votes.

Hi, foreigner here, can any Americans explain why the f MTG's opinions seem to get a disproportionate amount of coverage even when they're fairly bland ones like this? As far as I can tell she's not a member of the cabinet or in any kind of leadership role within the party, or have I missed something?

Is it really just as simple as the press loves to give disproportionate airtime and column inches to far-right demagogues, even when it's the Guardian?

[–] ameancow@lemmy.world 13 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

We had a genre of television show in the US called "Professional Wrestling" which underwent a number of name-changes and variations over the years like "World Wrestling Federation." and other titles and was all mostly controlled by one media company.

It was not a real professional sport of any kind, but it always pretended it was real. It featured scripted characters who became more and more sensational and outlandish fighting in pre-determined, choreographed "fights."

It was just a form of story-telling escapism and fantasy for people who didn't read books. Because it always maintained it was "real" despite all evidence to the contrary, some segment of people got so wrapped up in the stories about heroes and villains that they fiercely defended the idea that it was real, despite featuring characters who did magic and the like, and not only resisted attempts to tell them it's fake, they got mad at people trying to tell them it's fake, because they felt like someone was trying to take away their fun. This was basically Lord of The Rings as an ongoing story for illiterate teenagers.

Marjorie Taylor Greene is a Professional Wrestling character. She is an antagonist whom people who don't read love to hate or hate to love. Despite being an obvious "antagonist character" enough people wanted to believe in her that they got her elected to office. This is because broadly, people everywhere want narratives and storylines more than they want material outcomes.

Most conservative politics has gone this direction. It can be argued that the Democrat party here, the "opposition party" is in on this act to a degree, or maybe entirely in on it.

It should also be noted that Donald Trump was deeply involved in Wrestling media and learned how kayfabe works many years ago.

Well right now it's news because... Well, her opinions are reasonable and sometimes even well thought out which, you know, for MTG is news worthy next her usual mode is "Karen on crack cocaine spouting conspiracy theories"

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

the press loves to give disproportionate airtime and column inches to far-right demagogues

Bingo.

Now you basically understand how we got here.

[–] skisnow@lemmy.ca 4 points 23 hours ago

Yeah I suspected it might be the case, I was just hoping I was wrong.

[–] buttnugget@lemmy.world 10 points 23 hours ago

She’s famous for being dumb and extreme, and she was an early Trump diehard. That’s pretty much it.

[–] frustrated@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

She has a record of making statements that bear a profound stupidity that attracts attention. She is the originator of the "jewish space laser" meme. She is also on a weird redemption arc (it wont work) but she seems to be more reasonable and is acting more professionally since Trump took office.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 12 points 1 day ago

TRUMP HAS BEEN ignoring her since he got elected, she probably expected a cabinet seat, more publicity,,,etc. Shes on a vendetta right now, and the gop really have pushed her out of thier backdoor deals.

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago

Just because she's a provocateur and gets a lot of attention because of it. It's also breaking ranks so it will get press anyway.

[–] thatKamGuy@sh.itjust.works 47 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Speaking as one, we Progressives & Leftists need to ditch this purity-level mentality - it’s self-defeating.

Is MTG an absolute shit-goblin? 100%! But can she be useful in restoring ACA funding, and releasing the Epstein files? Also, 100%!

This is in part how the right has managed to shift the Overton window so far towards their side since the 2000’s. It’s about damned time we co-opt such successful tactics in order to bring some sanity back.

[–] buttnugget@lemmy.world 10 points 23 hours ago

There’s no strategy even needed. A vote is a vote. Who cares who votes?

[–] chillpanzee@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

She's an attention removed seeking relevance. She will never willingly help Democrats. That's as obvious as the sun rising tomorrow.

e: interesting censorship. lol

[–] LucidNightmare@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 14 hours ago

.ml censors words like bitch and whore.

For.. some reason? Oh, right. .ml, they're all about that shit. lol

[–] thatKamGuy@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Is the removed word the 2nd letter of the alphabet, followed by something you scratch?

Or is it the Australian term of endearment?

[–] chillpanzee@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

lol. Yeah, I was describing that aussie term of endearment with a phrase that rhymes with attention chore

[–] buttnugget@lemmy.world 5 points 23 hours ago

Wait, that’s not the Aussie term of endearment. That’s the C-word.

They're just never going to bring the House back in session...

They can't control their own party. And they're not going to pass anything by law. There's zero incentive for Republicans to bring it back.

[–] Xanthobilly@lemmy.world 54 points 1 day ago (2 children)

After the omnibus you could tell they checked out for the year. This was planned all along. They’re done with democracy and funded their personal army.

[–] zd9@lemmy.world 72 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"If conservatives become convinced that they cannot win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. The will reject democracy."

[–] neukenindekeuken@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It's important people understand this quote was made by a diehard republican.

Those things run on fiscal years, not calendar years.

But if the House resumes, they have to sit the new members, which means there's enough to force a procedural vote on releasing the Epstein list.

They'd rather prevent that then do the single filibuster proof bill a year they can get past the Senate.

trump will just keep doing shit and fighting in court than try to pass real laws.

The risk for them is all this combined with the DNC finally pulling their heads out of their ass and fighting for down allot spots again.

We're not just gonna see a blue wave, we're gonna see an actual.progressive wave of people who want to fight fascism.

Jog my memory a little. But didn't she heckle Biden when he said Trump would take away Obamacare?

[–] TallonMetroid@lemmy.world 54 points 1 day ago

That was when the only people supposed to be at risk were brown people. Now it's her family on the chopping block. Totally different!

[–] Revan343@lemmy.ca 26 points 1 day ago

She's not very smart, she probably believed he wouldn't try to

[–] Empricorn@feddit.nl 29 points 1 day ago (2 children)

The enemy of my enemy is... still a hateful, toxic harpy. But we can temporarily ally ourselves with her to fight the more dangerous and urgent threat Trump represents.

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Of all people I never expected her to go against the grain.

[–] Buelldozer@lemmy.today 10 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Really? Because she's gone counter to Trump / MAGA on the Iranian Strikes, the Epstein Files, and referred to the situation in Gaza as "Genocide". She's not a good person but she does occasionally hop off the Trump train.

[–] BCBoy911@lemmy.ca 2 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago) (1 children)

Yeah this pivot she's making is actually quite predictable. She's a populist and a good room reader. She's also a racist, transphobic, QAnon freak, but she has her finger on the pulse better than the GOP establishment and is trying to get out of the room before the discontent explodes in their faces.

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

I'm not American and didn't pay close enough attention to her to know how good her grift was.

I guess this is a good sign?

It’s not an alliance. It’s just voting. I don’t understand why people are talking like this.

[–] LovingHippieCat@lemmy.world 33 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I imagine one of her stipulations would be to ban all trans healthcare.

[–] andros_rex@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago) (1 children)

Was absolutely lovely (/s) to have a conversation with my doctor today about what my options would be if they do that. Government so small that it fits in my doctors office. I’ve been on HRT since Obama was in office.

[–] LovingHippieCat@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago

Ive been on hrt since 2016, so same. I've been stocking up on my estrogen (also switching to injections and lowering my spiro dose, which the higher dose turned out to be needless since my lower dose keeps my T down super low) so that I can at least have that for a year or more. Then there's DIY. Such lovely conversations to have about losing care because the government doesn't want us to exist.

[–] distantsounds@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago

Gavin Newson liked this.

[–] Timbits@lemmy.ca 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Won’t be a deal breaker for the Dems.

[–] LovingHippieCat@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I dunno about that, they've gotten rid of several anti-trans riders in the past couple of bills, including removing them from the BBB. The Dems in the Senate have almost always unanimously voted against anti trans stuff. Occasionally you'll get a couple of defectors but usually not.

Is MTG really a good person but can't read? No...No she's still a cunt.

[–] dugmeup@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

It's cause her own immediate family's premiums are going to go up.

Tomorrow if these insurance companies gave members of Congress 100% free insurance, say goodbye to the crumbs the plebs get today.
