Valerie Plante is leaving politics.

She was an amazing mayor.

She has gotten a lot of blame for things beyond her control. Canada has one of the highest immigration rate on the planet. Visible homelessness has increased in every single province, from the Atlantic to the Pacific. That had nothing to do with her. Yet some people still blame her for the housing crisis 🤦

Most Canadian mayors are managers. They just manage stuff. They have no vision for the future. That's why many Canadian cities are a horrible disaster.

Valerie Plante is one of the few mayors who is actually a transformative figure.

She widened sidewalks.

She created the single-largest bike lane network in North America.

She created car-free streets every summer

Her last decision was to ban cars from the Mount-Royal Park

Montreal elections are coming very soon:

Let's hope whoever replaces her continues on this path.

As a Montrealer, just letting people the next election is not looking good.

The current opposition party Ensemble Montreal wants to undo her work, increase the amount of AirBnb’s, and is made up of incredibly Zionist, right wing, anti vax, etc leaders. They are currently polling really good, even if they are commuting many violations with their sign placements.

Tbf they're only polling like 20%, the large amount of undecided makes it like that, I suspect much of the undecided vote will go to projet montreal

I keep hearing that about Ensemble Montreal, but never saw any reporting on it. You got sources to share?

Interested in Transition Montreal actually, but haven't done my due diligence yet on any of the parties.

I agree - thank you for posting this, OP.

And I'm very impressed with Montrealers for making such great use of their bicycles. I imagine there are long-term health benefits that will result from this.

I hope her work inspires other mayors.

American here. What are all the circular things behind her?

Those are the focusing lenses for the space laser, which was powered down for the picture.

Looks like she is standing in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Place_des_Arts. So that is likely some kind of street art.
