That seems like a good reason not to go skiing there.

[–] Rusty@lemmy.ca 40 points 1 month ago

Or you can just stick to the marked runs. Off-piste skiing is always more dangerous.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

But that would require at least a couple of functioning brain cells.

[–] Prunebutt@slrpnk.net 1 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

That pit probably wasn't there a few weeks before. It's not like this stuff gets puton maps.

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 1 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah I would avoid skiing in any area where there's a possibility of crevasses forming without me being informed.

[–] Prunebutt@slrpnk.net 1 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Well, then good luck, finding that out.

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 1 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Do crevasses ever form on ski pistes when they're open? I feel like most people are of a like mind with me.

[–] Prunebutt@slrpnk.net 1 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

They can more or less spontaneously form on steep, snow-covered slopes. Pretty much impossible to predict, where they form (maybe you can guess, based on the weather, but I'd be quite a guess).

Disclaimer: I'm no snow-scientist. But I grew up in the alps and I went ski-mountaineering a bunch of times.

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 1 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

To my understanding, crevasses form in ice, not snow. So if you are not skiing on a glacier or ice sheet, you won't fall in one.

[–] Prunebutt@slrpnk.net 1 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Snow is ice. And a bunch of weird material science happens when snow gets compressed, melts a bit in the sun and freezes again (which is afaik how glaciers formed in the first place - how else did the ice get there?).

You actually want to have an ice sheet on the slope when you go skiing. Otherwise the snow would get pushed away from the skis after a few swings and the ground wouldn't be covered anymore (ruining the skis of the people that come after you).

I remember a crevasse forming onthe slopes of the mountain I grew up at when I was 9, I think. Obviously, it was only about 1.5m deep, but it was a clear tear in the snow sheet and you could see the grass underneath the snow.

Skiing on glaciers has been done since the invention of skies.

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 1 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Presumably if the ice is only a few metres thick, falling in a crevasse is not too dangerous

[–] Prunebutt@slrpnk.net 1 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Look at the crevasse. It is "only" a few metres deep.

... the skier would syill have broken a few bones if they fell in.

I fucking hate that apparently it's necessary to add a countdown to keep people's attention for more than two seconds and I have ADHD.

[–] azertyfun@sh.itjust.works 15 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Same, and I'm not well-versed into the neurology of it all but I think it's something way worse than the symptoms of ADHD.

Five seconds is well within my attention span. I forget everything the minute I open a door or open a new tab, but this ain't that. I can watch something in silence, my brain distracts itself, that's kind of the whole problem. This though? This is about promising an impending dopamine hit to a restless junkie who was about to scroll down for a quicker hit.

No, scratch that. This is about the video editor constructing a strawman of that restless junkie, pandering to that, followed by a (proto-)fascist algorithm eeking out every last bit of video retention from its users for maximum profit. Even if 95 % of users don't actually need the countdown to keep watching, and the 5 % remaining really should not be using that app for their mental well-being, the algorithm will mercilessly incentivize creators to put in the countdown.

Since legislating algorithmic attention-hoarding doesn't sem likely to hit the political docket anytime soon, the only winning move is not to play.

Or this is just the style of video now

[–] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 34 points 1 month ago

Yeesh! Pretty sure this is why you're supposed to stay on trails.

[–] jaschen306@sh.itjust.works 31 points 1 month ago

When I was younger and stupid I decided to find fresh tracks off the main path with a buddy. I was in front and eventually decide to stop and look at the map to see when to cross back to a lift.

While sitting in the snow and looking at my map, the wind caught my map and it flew out of my hands and down the mountain. I watch this map fly down the flat face of the mountain and back up. It was then I realized that I was about 10ish feet before a cliff drop. My buddy was about to fly past me when I waved him to stop and he stopped even closer to the edge.

It took us 2 hours to claw and climb back up the hill were we came from. We went back down the hill and rested for that day.

Don't stray from the groom runs.

The guy doesn't have a guardian angel. He has a platoon of guardian angels working in shifts 24/7/365.

[–] CookieOfFortune@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Small drones can prevent issues like this.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Not being a fucking moron and skiing in places like this prevents issues like this.

[–] Zoomboingding@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

Love how he was like "oh shit a random crevasse that I almost fell down and died in! Well, surely there won't be any more"

[–] pigup@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago
