I remember there was something about not being allowed to accept payments on other platforms
But this is a donation, and there was that Google vs. Epic ruling recently so maybe the dev can add it now?

You can, as long as your app as distributed on the Play Store only accepts payments via Google Play. You can take payment on your own website or APKs distributed elsewhere, as long as there isn't a way to get there through the app. But you can tell users to visit your website to manage their account and payments. Can't link to it, but you can tell users to do it.
The website linked from playstore has a link to BuyMeACoffee that directly supports the dev.
This method does not remove ads tho I assume.
