Almost like handing everyone a veto wasn't a good design decision.

Rules (2024-08-30)
- This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
- No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
- Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
- No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
- Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
- If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
- Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
- Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
- No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
- Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.
(This list may get expanded as necessary.)
Posts that link to the following sources will be removed
- on any topic: Al Mayadeen, brusselssignal:eu, citjourno:com, europesays:com, Breitbart, Daily Caller, Fox, GB News, geo-trends:eu, news-pravda:com, OAN, RT, sociable:co, any AI slop sites (when in doubt please look for a credible imprint/about page), change:org (for privacy reasons), archive:is,ph,today (their JS DDoS websites)
- on Middle-East topics: Al Jazeera
- on Hungary: Euronews
Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com
(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)
Ban lengths, etc.
We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.
If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.
If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org
Most small cointries wouldn't have probably joined if there wasn't a veto
It was, back at the time.
Now maybe it is time to have some more complex system where some decision need unanimity, some a qualified majority (2/3 for example) and some just a simple majority with clearly written rules about what need what majority.
I mean it both is and isn't. It does help small countries from being steamrolled by the bigger ones, so it was easier to get countries to join knowing that they would not be overruled by Germany, France and Britain. The assumption was that you would have rational actors in place that wanted to do good for their people. It's been working well, mostly.
But also yeah, it's frustrating to see one or two bad actors mess things up.
Individual countries can still act though, it just won't be an EU coordinated thing.
Edit: Damn autocorrect.
@CAVOK @resipsaloquitur
Yeah, no reason why 25 or 26 countries can't coordinate to do exactly what they were planning via the EU. And more still.
48 days left.
Get megafucked, Orban! I hope your Syrian dentist is a terrible roommate.
Until he gets elected again? Dude's been sitting president for 16 years. I don't expect that to change, even in the face of election loss and nation-wide protests. This is Putin country, he will make sure everything stays the same by any means possible. Look at Serbia. Same thing. They fought valiantly, and in the end nothing has really changed.
We have to accept that some countries in Europe and the EU are under the direct control of our main and biggest adversary. The US can be tangentially be counted to them as well.
If they vote that fucker in again, the EU should trade membership of Ukraine for Hungary. They can join the new USSR.
Just one nation can derail everything? How can that be? Itβs so fucking easy to bribe just one!!! They need to fix thatβ¦
This is also how Texas and Florida affect America in basically the same way
I think they influence just the USA, not all of America
Is there another country with the word America in its name?
There is a continent called America with 30 countries on it.
Calling the USA America is like calling Germany Europe. It's just not the same thing. And frankly, assuming the name of the continent as if one were the only one there is quite arrogant. Like China presuming to be Asia. Just because they are very large doesn't mean the others don't matter
And only 1 has America in its name
Youβre being willfully obtuse here
@zipfile @jenesaisquoi we all can see which country you mean.
We can also see the arrogance in claiming the name of a continent for your country.
Itβs not arrogance itβs literally the shorthand name of the country lol
@zipfile that you donβt recognise the arrogance isnβt much of a surprise.
Itβs equally unsurprising yall think itβs arrogance when no other country shares the name and the continent is technically called the Americas
Calling the USA America is like calling Germany Europe.
If Germany was literally called the republic of Europe it would actually be appropriate
If Germany were called Republic of Europe then, no, it wouldn't be
So, if a country in the EU is no longer adhering to the same mindset and practices, what is the solution? When they did , they joined the EU, but now? It seems to me that Hungary is just profiting off the rest, while actively sabotaging the whole construct.
Democracy I think. They're having an election soon. Also put rules in place for all EU members on how to safeguard democracy, which has been happening for some time.
I still have hope for Hungary.
Orban can't be removed soon enough.
If Orban is reelected, the EU needs to take definitive action on Hungary and either punish its people for their choice or Hungary for no longer fulfilling the criteria of becoming an EU member
uuugggghhhh
These fucking quislings...
Ah. Of course...
