Is One Battle After Another that good? I haven't heard much buzz around it aside from the oscars.

Cinematography is excellent, acting is great and it has some heavy hitters on screen. The story, well, it had to be your type of movie. I'm not a critic. The movie didn't land for me and my opinion formed pretty early because the topic wasn't something I was interested in.

None of the characters grow. There's no exploration of the outside world beyond the characters. It's very character driven in every aspect. You only see what the characters can see. IMO, every character has significant flaws and weren't likeable. It can be one or the other but not both.

I enjoyed the film for its good aspects but i won't be doing a rewatch.

To offset the other comment, I would say it's a good movie but it's probably not for everyone. While it has quite a few action scenes, I would say those are not the main focus of the story. It's a movie about a guy who stood up for his ideals in a violent way when he was younger and paid the price. Now, 15-20 years later, he does his best to leave it all behind. He lives a very private life, shuts out his trauma with drugs and can barely remember how to contact his old friends. The problem is, someone from his past still has a score to settle and his innocent teenage daughter gets caught in the crossfire so he's forced to deal with the consequences of his decades-old actions again.

Also, expect a bunch of pretty open criticism of the way things work in the USA right now. Right at the beginning, we see an attempt at freeing illegal immigrants from a detention camp and later there's a lot more.

It is good, if a little forceful with its message. Acting is fantastic, especially Leo and Benicio working off of each other.

I'd say it might even be heavy handed with the message, even if you agree with it.

It was more than good enough to suck me in anyways.

It was excellent, in my opinion. Great acting and never really knew what would happen next!

Honestly, this video was the best summarization of my impression with the film, including what bothered me about it: https://youtube.com/watch?v=Tzw9t22ngwI (has spoilers, in case you wanted to watch the film before taking in reviews of it).

It really is.
It's entertaining, funny, heart-renching, poignant, surprising, satisfying.
It's a fantastic wild ride.

I feel it's overrated. Maybe because I'm not American, but I don't really find the movie that memorable. It's relevant for sure but i doubt that makes a movie the best. The whole flashback at the start with Teyana felt perverted and silly while dragged out so long with no meaning to the remaining plot. Bugonia, Marty Supreme were my choice. Apparently some of the voters didn't even watch Marty.

I never watch or follow these, but I wonder if Timothees time spent campaigning ended up causing the film to be snubbed in every category. I haven't seen any competing movie except Frankenstein, but all I heard about the awards in the run up is that everyone is mad at Chalamet.

[–] MimicJar@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Voting ended about two weeks ago, and Chalemet's recent comments that caused negative press were about a week ago. So no, I don't think they caused him issues.

The film itself is just fine. It is well acted, so maybe best actor, but Michael B Jordan and Leo both have him beat.

Thank you for the information! Based solely on my friend group, Marty supreme never even existed and sinners and Frankenstein were the best movies all year, so I wasn't surprised about the results.
