Standard reminder that Guy Fawkes was actually a monarchist who wanted to blow up Parliament because they weren't Catholic enough.

And Pepe wasn't a Nazi.
But it's always fun [imagining] blowing up parliament.
I just find it continually hilarious that Fawkes has become this revolutionary/anarchist symbol, when he was in fact an authoritarian religious fanatic.
I understand. I find it sucks that authoritarian/ fascists coopt and forever taint and destroy symbols and words and people's childhoods.
Also a reminder that Alan Moore's choice of Guy Fawkes was intentionally ironic... or at least thats how I interpreted it
Because the king* wasn't tolerant enough* of Catholics. The plotters had hoped that James would permit Catholics their religious freedom, but he was repressive.
Remember when you felt like everyone could work together to make the world a better place?
Pepperidge Farms remembers.
But what the fuck is Pepperidge Farms going to do about it? Fuck Pepperidge Farms.
Owned by the Koch Brother and Zombie.
I think you've got the wrong person, I don't own shit.
I'm sure you at least own the night.
Watched it about 2 weeks ago for the first time and yeah. Especially the TV propoganda in the beginning is spot on.
'Moore might have summed up his overall complaints best in a now-archived interview with MTV: “Those words, ‘fascism’ and ‘anarchy,’ occur nowhere in the film. It’s been turned into a Bush-era parable by people too timid to set a political satire in their own country.”'

It's a good movie, but it's punching below it's weight of what it could be.
Wow, I just rewatched this randomly last week. It is really excellent the main reason it feels so contemporary is how it uses its tech and of course the story content.
The movie had characters using smart phones two years before the first iPhone was released. The iPhone was what exploded smart phones in the consumer market.
Not to take credit from the writers and director, but we’d also had the Sidekick craze and BlackBerrys were very popular, especially among business and Hollywood types as the time.
We weren’t watching video and doom scrolling yet, but texting was a huge problem and triggered early handsfree laws in a bunch of states.
I think some people have forgotten, but one of Apple’s biggest innovations was convincing ATT to give iPhone buyers unlimited 2g, then 3g data when buying the phone. I regretted getting rid of that plan for a while but now don’t.
Excellent points!
I did love my crackbery (blackberry) as both a user and as a sysadmin. The security and enterprise controls of those things were great! Also the models I used had an actual button keyboard!
The book still feels painfully relevant
