Stop using these apps, go outside

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

I do that, but it's not working well enough. I can do both.

First Amazon now Tinder... Who gave them the idea the term "camera roll" is a thing? Nobody "shops their camera roll" or allows "scanning their camera roll". Where the fuck did this shit come from?

EDIT: I'm old enough, by far, to know the origin of the term, i just think it's stupid that companies are suddenly using it in commercials over more common modern terms like gallery

[–] Bronzebeard@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

You just outed yourself as young. It's a holdover from physical film cameras, when film came in a roll. I'm digital, it's just your "photos taken on this device" folder

[–] MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

Camera roll comes from the fact that cameras used to use a roll of film to take pictures with...

lol... I feel fking old now...

[–] jivandabeast@lemmy.browntown.dev 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Other commenters have pointed out the terms actual origins, but on modern devices it got started as a term that was used way back on the original iPhones/devices

Every day I thank the Gods for having met my partner, and no longer needing to use dating apps is a huge part of it.

Anyway, does the word "enshittification" even make sense when the service was already shit to begin with? How do we even refer to a move like this? "Shittiness diversification"?

[–] Brewchin@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago

Who'd have imagined that "jumping the enshittification" would be a thing.

[–] MalReynolds@slrpnk.net 15 points 3 days ago

Passing the shit event horizon.

[–] njordomir@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

When I see all the people running off this cliff, and the trump loving gen Z guys, I have to wonder if I'm going to have 5 simultaneous girlfriends before a single girl smiles at them. You gotta have self-respect before others will respect you.

Tinder scanning my photo library, reading my diary and social media. Then it automatically generates perfect pictures and text for my dating profile. Then an AI bot looks at profiles for me and chats with other AI bots to set up dates. It then automatically adds a date to my calendar and makes a reservation in a restaurant. Nice.

Leads to my favorite punchline/rebuttal combo "do you need the robot to fuck your wife for you too?"

[–] Patrikvo@lemmy.zip 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

So, AIs are going to be breeding humans. And that brings us one step closer to the Matrix.

[–] Samskara@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 days ago

AI government assigned wife as a default.

People will outsource their thinking, decisions, everything to their AI overlords.

You will have no agency and be happy.

[–] Samskara@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago

Yes, but AI arranged.

[–] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 20 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Honestly, that sounds like a great experience.

It might actually lead to a relationship though, so there's no way Tinder will make it so easy.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 days ago

Oh yeah, it takes out all the humanity put of the dating experience, so that you can just focus on the transactional sex.

And all it costs you is ALL of your privacy

Burn it to the ground

Owned by Match Group, the same company that destroyed the dating site that matched compatible people too well.

pick photos and determine what they're into.

Why not do things the old fashioned way and just ask? Almost like a survey or something.

And not both charge people subscription fees and harvest their data? Gotta think of the money broski.

[–] winkerjadams@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 3 days ago

Cause that way only harvests a small piece of data you willingly submit and could be wrong. Harvesting someone's entire gallery is way more info to use and sell

Not to detract from graphene, but stock Android can let you manage what specific pictures each app has access to. I don't trust Meta with full access to my gallery, so anytime I have to upload something to Whatsapp, I have to specifically grant permission for that photo to Whatsapp.

[–] kinkles@sh.itjust.works 29 points 3 days ago

Same on iOS too

[–] semperverus@lemmy.world 27 points 3 days ago

Fun fact, that functionality literally came from GrapheneOS. Google onboarded it from Graphene.

[–] Everyday0764@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

yup, my tinder app has access to 6 photos total, scan those if you want

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Orrrrrr, you could, and hear me out.....NOT use products from argueably THE biggest invader of privacy of our times. You could just use another messanger.

[–] officermike@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago (3 children)

I don't decide what I use for work. My employer does.

[–] WolfmanEightySix@piefed.social 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Your employer is allowed to tell you what apps you have on your personal phone?

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I had a shit employer, I'm normally self-employed but I took a job one winter, they wanted me to download some app called Deputy to like spy on me 24/7. I never did.

[–] Zombie@feddit.uk 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Your employer owes you a phone if they want you to use software that they specify.

[–] cole@lemdro.id 2 points 3 days ago

probably not a realistic take, even if I agree with it.

Whatsapp is so popular that if you're outside of the US the expectation is not weird

[–] Sir_Kevin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 days ago

On your company phone.. right?

[–] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Android and iOS also have guardrails around this. The OS asks for user consent and the user can grant no access or limited access.

Limited access, which is what you’ll want for a dating app that requires photo sharing, has been in iOS since 2020 (iOS 14). Android has been doing it since 2022 (Android 13).

[–] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

Psh, I use GOS without Storage Scopes. I simply only take flattering photographs of my Adonis-like form (they're swiping left anyway, smh)

So when my tinder AI meets and dates another person's AI, openAI will send me the bill for their AI wedding, then when the divorce comes, they'll sue for half of my real life stuff?

Neat.

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

This is a horrible idea and everyone involved in its conception and implementation should be barred from working in technology ever again.

[–] NoForwadSlashS@piefed.social 15 points 3 days ago

Got it, promotions all around.

[–] nutsack@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 3 days ago

no I'm good thanks i already put my nuts in there

[–] Supervisor194@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

taps_head.jpg can't scan my camera roll if I don't have one.

[–] Charlxmagne@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

"Plans"? A bit late to the fucking party mate, google, fapple, meta/koobface have been doing that shit for years 🤦‍♂️
