Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must begin with TIL. Linking to a source of info is optional, but highly recommended as it helps to spark discussion.

** Posts must be about an actual fact that you have learned, but it doesn't matter if you learned it today. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.**

Rule 2- Your post subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your post subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding non-TIL posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-TIL posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Of these states, six have Democratic trifectas, 23 have Republican trifectas, and seven have divided governments. There are currently 14 states that do not require identification at the polls outside of what is required by federal law. Of these 14 states, 10 have Democratic trifectas, and four have a divided government.

Most US citizens support the requirement for ID. We just want the IDs to be freely attainable and not make people jump through hoops.

And all states in Germany and provinces in the Netherlands require voter ID.

[–] Denixen@feddit.nu 8 points 3 days ago

And in Sweden. I don't think any country in Europe allows voting without photo ID. Could be wrong though.

[–] DaBPunkt@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

At least for Germany that is not true most of the time. If you vote in your home constituency it is normally enough to show your Wahlschein (letter that show that you allowed to vote and where).

[–] LaLuzDelSol@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

It's ... Really a pretty reasonable requirement. Yes, voter fraud is very rare etc etc but I think it matters psychologically. It's kinda like how a lot of the airline safety talk is there to reassure the passengers. If voters have to get their ids checked to vote it might instill some more confidence in the system.

I thought requiring ID to vote was illegal?

[–] KickMeElmo@sopuli.xyz 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

IIRC it's essentially that you can't be forced to show a document you have to pay for. So either they have to accept something you can obtain freely as ID, or they have to allow you to obtain an ID for free.

Yup. Voter ID requirements were basically seen as a poll tax by proxy. It's the poll tax that was the problem, not the ID.

Only if the SCOTUS says so.

How do they know that you haven't voted already or prevent someone else from voting in your place?

[–] tiotok@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

My state (republican trifecta) requires a signature at the polling place that matches your voter registration card or photo ID card. I assume they can audit these if there’s a question.

Most people think specifically of photo ID when they see this. In Oklahoma (republican trifecta), you have options, including your voter registration card. I’m assuming there are variations in other states, as well. https://oklahoma.gov/elections/voters/proof-of-identity.html
