I say basically new because we've had them for maybe a month. Had to run the dishwasher again to get it unstuck. It's a crappy apartment provided dishwasher that doesn't do its job well (notice the food stains that won't come off). There's still melted plastic on the heating element and the plastic fumes are strong.

Edit: I was never taught that you're not supposed to put knives in the dishwasher. Going forward I will wash them by hand. Thank you all for letting me know.

Sounds like the knife fell out of the rack onto the heating element.

Personally, I don't even put my knives in the dishwasher. Too much chance for them to be damaged or damage something else.

Edit: I guess redditors have never seen a fucking ceramic knife before? Or am I missing something here?

Could also just be a painted blade knife, which are also common.

I wash my knives in the dishwasher all the time. Wood handles and riveted handles suffer, but plastic handles wash just fine. Stop buying shitty knives.

They don’t, actually.

The plastic on the handle is a thermoplastic. Every time you send it through the dishwasher, it loosens a bit each time. Eventually the handle will become a danger to use with no way to fix. Before that happens, small gaps form which will harbor bacteria.

Also the water spray causes them to bounce around and dull (or in the case of the OP’s ceramic, chip)

Finally, the harsh deferent used degrades the plastic. This won’t have any issues that’ll crop up before the first two become problematic, but it will cake the plastic to turn whitish

Basically, my parents agree with you and also wonder why my knives actually stay sharp.

if there are food stains in the dishwasher after a full cleaning cycle, then you shouldn't be using the dishwasher for anything. the landlord might replace it, but it'll just be another discount bin bullshit washer.

You're giving advice to a reddit repost bot

Food staibs is probably because the jets on the whirly spinny water fan are pluged. Remove and place under sink tap and see if all the ports are flowing. I had issues like that. Now I don't even prewash my dishes just get the large shit off with a fork.

Sounds like an excuse to carve a new wooden handle.
