Ahhh yes, the telcos, all of whom have lost all their customer information many times over with no real consequences, but those same people have had their credit ruined. This cant go wrong letting them have copies of peoples IDs which now will have their signature on record so that convincing IDs can be made from.

Would Voice over IP services be the solution to this? Or do those require ID too?

They would be unaffected, I would imagine. Especially if you are not using cell towers for cellular data (so no SIM/eSIM would be needed in the phone period).

Signal already works well for my family for communication.
