It’s these moments when the mask slips when you know exactly how desperate they are

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 34 points 12 hours ago (3 children)

They know their options are death, prison, or rigging the elections.

Which is part of the reason Nixon got an out. I know that's what everyone blames for our current predicament, but I don't think it's so simple.

The point of all that is that it was a negotiation, both for him and for future incidents. Give up the power that you've abused and we won't pursue you in your personal life. It wasn't a small ask, but it did prevent Nixon from getting too desperate and attempting to use the power of the Presidency in a Trump-like manner.

These guys though, the current crop of Republicans have gone much rather than any previous crimes. I expect there are even worse things than Iran-Contra that we don't even know about yet. Not to mention all the domestic crimes we do know about, the ones we have (barely) prevented so far, and the very likely foreign crimes like the kickback on the $300b to Iran.

Only because “stop committing crimes” will never be an option

[–] halcyoncmdr@piefed.social 2 points 3 hours ago

Too late for that. Their crimes are enough to send all of them to prison for the rest of their lives at this point. Most of them are at least halfway through already as is.

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 3 points 12 hours ago

They could stop commiting crimes right now... I don't think their option tree would expand.

I wish I shared your optimism

[–] some_designer_dude@lemmy.world 8 points 6 hours ago

If only this had any teeth at all. The rich will never fear 350 million absolute sheep.

“Y’all, impeachment’s not even the big concern,” the House speaker said. “They will turn every committee of Congress into an investigative body, and they'll go after the president's family, the cabinet, his donors and friends.

“Half of you in this room will be targeted. I run the protection program. I’ll take care of you.”

[–] GroundedGator@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

That sounds like a ~~shake down for a bribe~~ perfectly legal solicitation for a campaign contribution.

[–] whosepoopisonmybuttocks@sh.itjust.works 24 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

What are they all so worried about? They haven't been doing anything illegal, have they?

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 5 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

It's projection. Look at how they've weaponized everything, so they naturally assume the Dems will do the same.

[–] halcyoncmdr@piefed.social 2 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

The difference is that the investigations into them will have a real factual basis and actual evidence. Not just a political motive and scare tactic.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Yes but they project the Dems will act like they do.

[–] Fishnoodle@lemmy.world 9 points 12 hours ago

Yup. We absolutely will... Unless you make us kill you all first

[–] Snapz@lemmy.world 11 points 10 hours ago

Is there also a Christian app that let's your son monitor your upcoming prison affairs, Mike?

[–] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 29 points 13 hours ago

I think I know why the Americans think they are the only ones who have freedom. They have no clue what that word means.

[–] AmbientDread@piefed.social 21 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Gee Mikey. Why not stop breaking laws? Cut out the bribing, lying, and cheating while you are at it.

[–] savvie@lemmy.zip 6 points 12 hours ago

Mikey ‘Mouse’ Johnson, esteemed Squeaker of the House, brandishing his rodent-like ‘clout’ against his GOP rivals

[–] gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world 17 points 12 hours ago

"It doesn't matter whether the ship is sinking or not, the important thing is that we stick together!" he said pleadingly to his fellow rats

[–] Corvidae@lemmy.world 6 points 12 hours ago

Fascinating that's he's more concerned about Democrats winning elections than prosecuting law breaking amongst connected party leaders.

[–] BillCheddar@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

The weird thing is that Mike Johnson is going to actually LOVE being a prison bottom.

[–] pachrist@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago

Well, it might not be gay. If he's the honey in the middle is there leeway?
