Lower Decks: Great

Discovery: Absolute garbage

[–] DaTingGoBrrr@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago (3 children)

What about it is garbage? The only Star Trek I have consumed is Discovery and I really like that show.

I find the whole story very bland and one dimensional. The characters don't get consistent growth, I mean look at Tilly. She had episodes where she did some really amazing stuff, but then the next episode they turned her right back into an incompetent presenting goofball.

Also Burnham's whole story arc was that she was comically special and the chosen one. That's not really what Star Trek is imo.

Seriously you should watch more series and you may understand the criticisms more.

Overall I still rank Discovery over Picard, but just barely. Both are at the bottom of my personal ranking

Discovery is a very flat, one-dimensional misread of Star Trek as a concept that plays fast and loose with established lore, created by a guy who harbors an active disdain for what Star Trek is fundamentally about. Discovery was an attempt to dumb down Star Trek for the average viewer by adding a bunch of action and talking down to its audience about very overt modern political issues that frankly don’t fit in the Star Trek universe.

Star Trek prior to the Kurtzman era was an examination of modern day social issues through a forward-looking optimistic lens. It imagined a world where humanity actually evolved as a species beyond our petty squabbles, and then offers you an opinion on how that could be realistically achieved by showing you how these humans interact with the universe beyond our solar system. Kurtzman’s Trek retcons all that and dragged humanity back down into the gutter that is our current modern world because he either doesn’t trust in your ability to read between the lines, or he has no optimism for humanity at all and offers the opinion that we can never and willer never evolve beyond the problems we’re having in the 21st century.

The best concrete example I have for you is with another’s Kurtzman Show, Star Trek Picard. It’s well established that in the time period Picard is in, humanity exists in a post-scarcity society. Humans do things like join Starfleet for the personal fulfillment and betterment of humanity’s understanding of the cosmos, rather than a paycheck. But in the new show there’s a scene early on where a retired Picard visits a woman living in what amounts to a space trailer and she chastises him about his privilege, because she’s living in squalor while he was a retired Starfleet captain with his own vineyard. This is obviously a mirror to the wealth inequality of today, but it makes no sense in the context of a world where poverty has been effectively eradicated.

Don't listen to the naysayers. I've been a trekkie since the '90s, and I very much enjoy Disco. It's not perfect (season 2 was especially messy), but most of the criticisms I hear against it make no sense to me and/or could easily apply to other beloved instalments in the franchise.

NUTREK: lower deck+prodigy> SNW,

picard and std are utter trash. picard couldve been better if they dint drop the big bad, or big good every season. STD under the showrunner was trying to escape the controversy from the previous seasons.

Why is it that every time that Discovery is mentioned, that someone ABSOLUTELY COMPULSIVELY HAS TO SHART IN THE MOST SPLASHING WAY POSSIBLE on it?!?

Does it burn so much in their mind for them to react like this at the mere mention of a show? Had the idea of having a successful empowered black female captain with emotions, traumatized them so much? Or is it that they feel so attacked in their masculinity?

I have rarely seen so much vile and intolerant totalitarian comments than on Star Trek subs. Then again, it’s true that I don’t go on X or Truth Social.

Burnham's whole story was "you are the chosen one" which is completely unentertaining for star trek. Her gender doesn't have to make me like bad writing.

Janeway was much better written. And while animated, Captain Freeman was written well too.

[–] FlatFootFox@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

When was she the chosen one? Season 1 made a point of showing that the guy who had been buttering her up about destiny was secretly orchestrating things.

[–] arrow74@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That was the entire plot of the final season.

Season 1-2 she actually had a good enjoyable arc and some character growth. Season 3 on was a steady decline for her and honestly many of the other characters

As with the stray downvotes I recieve for Koala knows what reason, I learned let it go. Let them stew in their anger.

[–] oppy1984@lemdro.id 2 points 1 week ago

Straight white male here, as another person said Voyager and Lower Decks both had strong female leads and both were great shows that I've watched every episode of.

The hate for Discovery is because it betrays the cannon built over decades by people who clearly didn't understand Star Trek. The has nothing to with the gender of the main cast, it's the terrible writing and betrayal of what Star Trek stands for.

[–] milkisklim@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I guess you weren't around for the hate DS9 got back in the day? Or Enterprise?

[–] MadMadBunny@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

Oh I was. I listened to all TNG, DS9 and VOY and ENT episodes as they originally aired.

shart

on it

Disregard

[–] svcg@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 week ago

I haven't sharted all over it yet, but that's only because the massive turbo lift dimension was so bloody dumb that I can't remember a single other thing about it.

The interview I saw with Tawny Newsome and Sonequa Martin-Green makes me feel like there's plenty of love between these two shows.

Undoubtedly. This was more a comparison of each show's demeanor.
