Well it was good while it lasted...

I wonder if a fediverse-friendly version exists. It would need to be slick to get the critical mass that makes those kinds of sites useful (like review sites, etc).

[–] janonymous@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Big federated version for all those sites would be awesome! The problem is probably that there are already like 12 different ones

[–] okwithmydecay@leminal.space 4 points 2 days ago

In theory it wouldn't be difficult to build an alternative for the Fediverse. Letterboxd gets its film data from TMDB, which has an API that is free for non-commercial use.

There is NeoDB which is great software, but its official instance is mostly Chinese. I don't know if there are any ones that are mainly English, but I'd be down to join one.

It looks like eggplant.place is a primarily English instance. I don’t know if there are any others.

A fork of Bookwyrm.social?

Whew, I'm feeling pretty good for not using Letterboxd as I was considering moving to it a while back. The platform started off good but it kind of devolved into every review trying to be a funny one liner instead of actually reviewing the movie.

I also found it very weird that Letterboxd doesn't have any TV shows, it's only movies.

I only recently started using Letterboxd and I noticed the same thing about their movie reviews. Everyone tries to come up with the snarkiest comment that will get voted to the very top.

[–] keyez@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

It became that way shortly after it blew up a year or so ago. If you find some reviewers you like or have similar taste, just seeing their reviews on top and browsing their lists makes the site a lot more friendly.

They promised show support years ago but for some reason people were really insistent that LB should remain movie only.

[–] Deebster@infosec.pub 5 points 3 days ago

It's been announced as coming "later this year" for the last three years.

There are certain TV series on letterboxd now, though not sure you can filter for them specifically. The only way I've been able to tell us runtime being several hours.

For example Pam & Tommy (2022) is a limited series on there plus Lessons in Chemistry (2023).

rotten tomatoes is owned by Fandango, IMDB by Amazon, so this makes sense (in the worst way).

[–] janonymous@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

What do you think is the reason? I would assume it's mostly for their data? Or would they need with the ranking to help their movies?

[–] orionsbelt@midwest.social 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

i would guess it’s to help rank their own content.

the user data is a bonus.

[–] neuracnu@lemmy.blahaj.zone 15 points 3 days ago

Refused to use it. Advised other people to avoid it.

Letterboxd getting cancelled after season 3 somehow.

[–] LuckyFogic@feddit.online 1 points 1 day ago

I was hoping for six seasons and a movie 😭

Man, I was just starting to switch over to Letterboxd because IMDB now requires I have an account to read reviews... If this goes through it's only a matter of time before the enshittification begins. We need to create a decentralized movie/tv review site!

[–] _m_cubed_@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You're in luck because there’s at least one already. Check out NeoDB.

[–] LuckyDevil@piefed.social 2 points 2 days ago

Thanks, i'll check it out!

I used Letterboxd for a single summer, and have since moved entirely to Trakt.tv. So far like it way more.

[–] one_old_coder@piefed.social 1 points 8 hours ago

Thanks for giving an alternative.

[–] jonesy@aussie.zone 3 points 3 days ago

I used trakt for years and the new v3 UI is such garbage, combined with jacking the price up I jumped ship rather than keep dealing with them. They still offer the far superior V2 UI, but only for paying subscribers.

[–] Wistful@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 3 days ago

Aw man, that sucks, since there isn't really a good alternative for it.

[–] jonesy@aussie.zone 4 points 3 days ago

For fucks' sake, I just moved to Letterboxd after Trakt decided to force their dogs but new UI on everyone and quadruple their premium costs, this sucks.

Private equity destroys the world.

[–] bmpvy@piefed.social 2 points 3 days ago

Wähhhh I don't like this at all

[–] lemmyng@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Cloudstream and its various extensions have allowed me to keep track of my movies, thank you very much.

[–] WhoIzDisIz@lemmy.today 2 points 3 days ago

Shhhhhh!!! You trying to put them under a microscope again?
