5808 active users, 2 more than in March.

Some of this will be due to new features in the latest version but I think most of it is because previously PieFed was not accurately keeping track of user activity. Now that it is, the numbers are bigger.

Zoomed out is interesting, seems like we're at a new baseline high.

What happened in ~February ?

Great to see!!

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 30 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I've been seeing a lot of new usernames but tbh I was writing them off as potential bots from the Tankie side trying to push election year propaganda.

[–] mesamunefire@piefed.social 21 points 2 weeks ago (5 children)

I dont think people care enough about piefed for that sort of thing.

[–] rimu@piefed.social 24 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah the whole threadiverse is the size of one medium-sized Facebook group.

[–] cryptTurtle@piefed.social 4 points 2 weeks ago

There are dozens of us! Dozens!

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 3 points 2 weeks ago

And yet Hexbear exists and it is overflowing with actual bot accounts. There is no debate, here, there is an active payed and militant psyops campaign aiming to radicalize users on the Fediverse.

[–] socsa@piefed.social 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You'd be wrong. ML is literally a training ground for information warfare. Nobody is seeking influence on the fediverse yet, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have value as a training ground for teaching people how to curate influence on larger platforms like reddit and Facebook.

What's the ratio of difficulty to number of people there?

[–] Kirk@startrek.website 1 points 2 weeks ago

Right, they're not bots just zealots who got banned from everywhere else.

[–] manxu@piefed.social 22 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I am sorry, but TWO more than in March? Am I missing a few zeros there?

[–] CovertOperative@piefed.zip 8 points 2 weeks ago

March is near the left edge of the graph. So yeah, looks to be two.

[–] rimu@piefed.social 3 points 2 weeks ago

Today it's 5914, 106 more than March.

Stick around for more exciting updates. Or you could just look at the direction of the graph and get the idea.

What exactly does PieFed do? I'm just on Lemmy, does PieFed let me see more fediverse content?

[–] gedfromgont@piefed.ca 27 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

I am simplifying probably but essentially it is like Lemmy and the two are talking to each other. Source: me and you, since I am on PieFed and you are on Lemmy but you can see my comments and I can see yours.

There's also the political difference that the Lemmy devs are often labelled as Tankies, not the case with the PieFed dev(s).

[–] erebion@news.erebion.eu 3 points 2 weeks ago

Also, the UI. I migrated my server from Lemmy to Piefed, UI just feels more mature and I seem to require less resources.

[–] TherapyGary@piefed.diffrint.org 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I haven't noticed a real difference so far on my instance

[–] GreyEyedGhost@piefed.ca 8 points 2 weeks ago

I think the biggest technical differences right now are polls and combining comments from cross-posted posts. There is some back-end stuff that won't have a bearing on most users.

[–] artyom@piefed.social 23 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It adds a whole bunch of functionality that Lemmy lacks. In addition to not being run by tankies.

Transphobic tankies too.

4chan Filter – Flags content from 4chan for review.

Why the special treatment?

[–] guy@piefed.social 6 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

Guess it's because 4chan is a racist cesspool

Edit: see below

~~It bans users for no reason, and without explanation~~

[–] OpenStars@discuss.online 10 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

PieFed is software.

Many Lemmy instances also ban users, in fact its flagship instance Lemmy.ml is famous for it.

Yours is a very sensible instance, which btw also offers a PieFed equivalent in PieFed.zip.

[–] rjwilliamson@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

EDIT: DISREGARD MY COMMENTS - This was in fact a bug, and seems to have been fixed with the latest update. Just checked my old account logins and they work now.

~~I was mainly referring to the flagship instances. I am on a smaller piefed instance as well, and have had no issues. At least with Lemmy, they would give you a reason, but in my case they acted like it was a bug. So draw from that what you will, but that has been my experience, and I am currently unable to register an account on a primary piefed instance, without being given a reason for that being the case.~~

[–] JillyB@beehaw.org 7 points 2 weeks ago

Props for publicly walking back a bold claim, looking into it further, realizing you were wrong, and admitting it. You love to see it. We don't die on hills.

[–] OpenStars@discuss.online 3 points 2 weeks ago

PieFed is a lot newer than Lemmy and while it has some more features (also some less features, depending on the feature), it overall lacks polish in comparison.

I'm glad they were able to get you sorted out:-).

[–] buliarous@piefed.social 2 points 2 weeks ago

the biggest thing is it aggregates lemmy and dedupes posts and aggregates other reddit like fediverse content thus its just all around better than lemmy imo -- people can still use lemmy you're just getting more high quality content with piefed

[–] one_old_coder@piefed.social 2 points 2 weeks ago

It's a different frontend for the same content. Also it has additional features. Same thing with a better interface IMHO.

THERE ARE DOZENS OF US!!!

[–] rjwilliamson@lemmy.zip 9 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Congrats to piefed devs! This is a bit more of an accurate user tracker if anyone is interested:

[–] greenbit@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 weeks ago

what happened at the start of the month

[–] MushuChupacabra@piefed.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

I remember it like it was only yesterday, when piefed was having some techn8cal difficulties for a few hours, and the tankies were out in force, yub-nubbing like Ewoks after the second Death Star blew up.

[–] DungeonTreasureHunt@piefed.social 2 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Great, but still wondering about the features, while using Voyager App. What is the best smartphone app to experience piefed ?

[–] rimu@piefed.social 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

People have a lot of different opinions on that. IMO Interstellar has the most PieFed-specific features.

https://piefed.social/community/fediverse/wiki/piefed-app

But a lot of people don't install any app and just use the PWA - https://join.piefed.social/docs/piefed-mobile/

[–] kuro_neko@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Connect is the only mobile app AFAIK that supports the full 1.7 API Spec including Follows.

[–] rimu@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago

Already! :-O

[–] aloofPenguin@piefed.world 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I'm using Blorp right now. The experience is good for everyday use, but it doesn't have all the features such ~~as keyword filtering (in the settings),~~ combining cross-posts (view the comments from all comms, it doesn't do that in my experience, at least not as clearly if it does. It does show you where the post has been cross-posted to though), and a few other things. ~~I'd say try it out (or any other compatible app, though I don't know of any others ATM), though, if you find yourself wanting access to any of the features not in the app, the most obvious & best thing would be the website.~~

E: I see you're using piefed.social on voyager, so the second part of my comment doesn't apply. I don't know how Blorp compares to Voyager, so can't help in that regard.

E2: Blorp does have keyword filtering, just doesn't sync with piefed

[–] OpenStars@discuss.online 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Just to add some additional points beyond what others have already said here: Voyager provides only experimental support for PieFed instances. That said, there are numerous features that you could set by rarely switching over to a browser environment that will continue to affect the content that your account sees inside Voyager on a more daily (hourly?) basis. Some examples are personally blocking an entire instance (Lemmy has something named an instance block but it is so pathetic by comparison that it might legit qualify as disinformation to call it that - suffice it to say that it still shows content from users on that instance, allows them to reply, DM you, triggering notifications, basically it's a community muting and not an instance block at all, whereas PieFed's is more of a TRUE instance block), and keyword filters. Bc those features are run on your home instance - in your case PieFed.social - they will still work when using Voyager to access your content.

[–] deutrino@mstdn.io 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

@OpenStars @DungeonTreasureHunt oh but Lemmy totes has real instance blocking planned for 1.0 🙄

[–] OpenStars@discuss.online 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

But if Lemmy devs allowed true instance blocking, then people might block Lemmy.ml? Gotta make sure that people always have access to that source of tRuE "alternative facts"!

Edit: tbf PieFed's is not a "true" instance blocker either - the so-called "blocked" accounts can still reply to and vote on your content, e.g. making fun of and taunting you, so that only you are unawares but everyone else can see it. Afaik true instance blocking does not exist on the Threadiverse, short of full defederation, and even that has severe challenges (namely the same problem that PieFed has: others can still submit content in a one-sided manner, leading to all kinds of confusion unless the defederation is implemented in the reverse direction as well).

[–] pentastarm@piefed.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Is this just piefed.social, or does it include the instance I'm on as well?

[–] rjwilliamson@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It should be all instances, I believe.

[–] pentastarm@piefed.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

Okay, thank you for the knowledge!
