For now, the United States continues to rely on the rest of the world for its lithium. After extraction, most of the world’s raw lithium is then transported to China
You don't waste energy when you can rely on slavery. That's been the motto of the west for most part of the last century.
That shit is coming to roost. As Chinese workers become wealthier ultra low wages are becoming less common.
We've already seen this happen with plastic recycling. Countries would send near worthless plastics that Chinese firms would sift through while paying tiny wages. As wages trended upward recycling that plastic waste was no longer economicly feasible.
We need to focus a good bit more in recycling existing battery packs as well.
