Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Guilty of what, public littering? I guess he did leave a pile of garbage on the street.

A succulent CEO murder?!

I see you know your judo well.

[–] GloriousGasHole@piefed.social 23 points 16 hours ago

I guess the good news is that the actual killer got away with it and might strike again.

Jury Nullification

This is what happens when you hire Wario as a defence attorney.

Well, the charges he’s pleading to are stalking. Not the murder charges, and pleading in the federal case can get the state case for murder thrown out on double jeopardy under NY law if the federal case is settled first.

This isn’t that bad of a move for him.

Stalking or murder, either way, it's life in prison.

[–] Earthwormjim91@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

He was facing that regardless. With virtually zero chance of being acquitted, no matter what the internet wants to think.

By getting rid of the state case though, he stands a chance of getting the federal one overturned on appeal and being free, vs getting it overturned on appeal and then just going straight to state prison.

https://www.npr.org/2026/08/14/nx-s1-5930700/mangione-federal-charges-guilty-plea

"I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan and he died," Mangione said in court Friday. "I knew what I was doing."

While he did plead guilty for the stalking charges, there is more to it than that.

[–] Earthwormjim91@lemmy.world 6 points 17 hours ago (4 children)

Well yeah. There’s no federal murder charge. Stalking can still carry a life sentence but he’d likely get less than that.

But, settling the federal case can kill the state case if the federal case is done first.

If the state case gets underway before the federal case is resolved, there’s no federal double jeopardy law to kill the federal case so he could still be convicted in both.

It’s always going to be better to only have one case at the federal level than convictions at the state and federal level.

Double jeopardy only applies to the same crime doesn’t it? Stalking and murder aren’t the same crime.

It's still completely insane to me that this pretty little Italian man is being punished for a crime that CCTV footage showed was a tall angry Anglo-Saxon man in his late 40s.

The original CCTV footage showed a much older very white very dangerous man.

The only way Mangione could be dangerous is if I put pineapple on my pizza or I mispronounced "Rigatoni". That's just a joke, I'd never put pineapple on pizza.. Pineapple is only good when it's fresh.

You are right on all counts except one. You know which one and I will fight.

Why would he plead guilty to something he didn't do?

[–] anarchy79@lemmy.world 19 points 20 hours ago

Because if he doesn't take the deal then they will make sure to throw everything at him and ream his life and chances of survival.

"Don't make this harder than it has to be, Mr Mangionski. Just sign here, and you will get a lenient 40 years in Gulag."

My guess is he's going for a hung jury with an eventual pardon if that fails.
