Crazy how much shit dropped on LTT simply from a gamer nexus video. It’s beautiful

[–] altima_neo@lemmy.zip 99 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I mean that shit was steamy. And Steve was so pissed, for a dude whose usually pretty chill, it really said a lot about the gravity of his accusations.

[–] BlinkAndItsGone@lemm.ee 81 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Every once in a while Steve gets visibly upset about corporate misbehavior, but I've been watching GN for a few years, and the news segment where he was replying to Linus's dismissive forum post is the angriest I've ever seen him.

[–] ji88aja88a@lemmy.world 20 points 1 year ago

You mean, he had expression in his voice?! 😂 lol.. I like Steve

[–] ShunkW@lemmy.world 64 points 1 year ago (1 children)

And all this because LMG started the war by calling them shit. You get what's coming to you eventually, I guess.

Glass houses

[–] Pons_Aelius@kbin.social 29 points 1 year ago (7 children)

It's like Harvey Weinstein, people in the industry knew he was a slimy piece of shit for years but he wielded too much power and speaking out was the death of your career. So few did.

Once it was out in the public press, the floodgates of people coming forward with similar stories opened up.

Probably not Forbes headline Linus would have wanted.

[–] Pons_Aelius@kbin.social 39 points 1 year ago (1 children)

To quote a couple of 20th century philosophers: Mick and Keith.

You can't always get what you want

But if you try sometimes well you might find

You get what you need

[–] andrewrgross@slrpnk.net 11 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Yeah. I don't know if this will produce change, but saying what they're saying is the best first step. I'm sure we'll all be watching for follow through.

Incidently, it's a good thing that Linus Sebastian recently handed over the role of chief executive to an experienced manager. I think it would have been very bad for Linus and the company for someone who has acknowledged being ill suited to running a company to try to handle this.

[–] Pons_Aelius@kbin.social 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Going from personal experience working in companies with techbros in charge you cannot fix the culture without removing all management and starting again from scratch.

The fact this happened for so long with LTT I doubt it can be turned around.

It doesn't matter if LS is no longer CEO. The culture he allowed to develop and did nothing to change lands the blame squarely at his feet. As long as he remains there it does not matter what his title is. The company will stay the same.

[–] roguetrick@kbin.social 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

It doesn't matter. Ownership hasn't changed.. CEOs are still beholden with the board and he has a controlling share. Nobody is dumb enough to pay actual money for a debt laden company that trades on the old owners name.

[–] LanternEverywhere@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

Having read the article, it's hard to imagine anyone doing a worse job handling the situation.

Needs more click bait.

Title: I did a bad

Description: just plugs for all his channels and sponsor and merch store. Fuck describing the video

Thumbnail: Linus soy face wide open with red arrow pointing to a 💩 emoji. There is a red circle around it.

[–] Haui@discuss.tchncs.de 75 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think it’s sad. All of it. Linus projected an image of a friendly geek when the channel was smaller. The first cracks I saw in that image appeared after covid in which I assume the channel (just as the rest of youtube) grew extremely.

Since then I noticed „slip ups“ where he went edgy and kind of lost part of his friendliness. I assumed it was because he was overwhelmed with his job as ceo since that job takes a heavy toll. I know from experience.

But the fact that he (and his wife and the new ceo) didn’t do anything against the obvious transgressions that were carried out under his watch (against this vendor as well as former employees, some of which have posted on youtube) is his (their) responsibility.

It’s just sad to see them making the same mistakes (being careless in the wrong department) as others before them.

For me it was visit to Louis Rossman https://youtube.com/watch?v=Shn7LdIrViQ

Truth is, I didn't know of Linus than, was only fan of Louis, but the way Linus was acting throughout that video was just unpleasant for me. I wouldn't wanna be in Louis' shoes than.

Second was recently in that Linux challenge where, I was convinced, he was working hard to find that bug and show to everyone how bas he is. His complaint of Linux was that it allowed him to delete software Linux told him not to delete. Yeah... cool.

[–] Haui@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes, the first one is familiar. I was kind of ok with it at the time but linus‘ condescending demeanor was kind of already obvious. I wrote it off at the time since I‘m autistic and also often get told I come across condescending. There you see why people need labels… we wouldn’t take it as personal if he was openly autistic (which I believe he is).

I didnt see the linux challenge but I saw when he wanted to change his gaming pc. Was it that? I would love if was more positive towards open source and stuff. But he‘s on the other side of the fence I suppose.

[–] monobot@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes Linux Gaming or Linux Daily chalenge, not sure right now but it generated a lot of discussion on the net.

He might be autustic or not, at that time I was giving it a pass since both of them were awkward, but with current discussion I remembered it immediately which is my instict telling me there is a connection.

[–] Haui@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 1 year ago

Yes, I agree. I had that exact feeling as well. At the time it seemed ok but it immediately popped into my head when I heard „condescending“.

[–] outplayed@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

With that video you're reading into things that aren't there. Linus is acting it up and Louis looks a bit shy but definitely enjoying the experience.

[–] monobot@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes, that is just mine subjective feeling as someone, at the time, not knowing of LTT but loving Louis.

[–] NightOwl@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think that was Linus being an awkward nerd. I think Louis also mentiond Linus does things differently from him where he did a lot of retakes, which Louis doesn't really do. So Linus probably came off more awkward and weird probably having to cut that down and do more one shots being a guest and all. He's better speaker now than back then. And he's obviously out of his element compared to Louis here, so adding to the awkwardness.

As someone who drives Linux on my gaming PC I hated his Linux videos. In all fairness I don't really like either distro he tried but at the end of the day you hand the average person Linux mint and they will be fine imo

I'm quite amazed that the majority of people here simply take Madison's allegations seriously and don't pull the usual misogynistic bullshit.

[–] PoliticalAgitator@lemm.ee 25 points 1 year ago

There is still plenty of the misogynistic bullshit.

[–] BendyLemmy@lemmy.world 52 points 1 year ago (2 children)

So really, it's not just me that found him to be producing smarmy and careless content? My first views were of his various challenges - where they consistently 'proved' that people can't do things in an OS that they don't have experience with, which means they'd be better off doing it in a much worse OS that they used since they were kids - and therefore it's better.

I really liked Nexus's video - though it didn't help me as I wouldn't waste time on LTT. I don't like or trust these coroporate video mills, any more than I trust Google/Youtube - they don't give a toss as long as the money flows and they didn't get sued.

[–] altima_neo@lemmy.zip 37 points 1 year ago

So the careless content didnt really matter much - so long that they were still a tech entertainment youtube channel. But with the advent of LTT Labs, theyre trying to push themselves into a more reputable tech reviewer space and thats where the problems arise.

[–] 601error@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Recently asked my coworkers. Turns out we all dislike Linus Sebastian and his content.

[–] Pons_Aelius@kbin.social 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Turns out we all dislike Linus Sebastian

I read that as "Turns out we all dislike Little Sebastian" and thought "Oh shit, don't let Ron Swanson hear you say that!"

Everyone you like will disappoint you someday. Fuck you Linus.

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

I just hope Louis Rossman doesn't snap.

Please don't Louis 🥺

Guy basically just puts out anger content now. He's a real hero who's fighting an important fight but he's just inundated with bullshit and seems is stuck seeing everything through shit colored glasses lately.

[–] monobot@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 year ago

I also hope he will pull out of this phase.

I even jokingly said to my friend "That's why New York can act badly." thinking with all that shit he was feeling better in NYC.

He accomplished a lot in his life, that is also not easy to accept.

[–] chemsed@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I mean everything goes to shit. 2023 could not get me more pessimistic. 2020 was a bad year, but I still got hope that it is temporary. Now, I see that companies have no limit in screwing their consumers and I can't do anything about it.

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

It's clear that the working class has lost a considerable amount of power over the last 20 years.

We should be celebrating AI replacing jobs, not terrified of it, you know? Like, clearly far too few are benefiting, and benefiting way too much, on the work of the many.

[–] Hector_McG@programming.dev 11 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Not everyone be any means, but if you admire narcissistic extroverts then sure, you’re always going to be disappointed.

[–] kryllic@programming.dev 6 points 1 year ago

I think that's usually the type of person who puts themselves out there in the public's eye to be consumed though
