Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

My ex grew up as a dirt poor Appalachian and thus was a huge lover of Dolly especially for her working to help alleviate the poverty and lack of education in the area. The world is worse off without her, but I think we oughta try to bring a little of her with us into the future. She was kind to all and helped anyone who needed it.

RIP, the world will be less without you but forever more for having had you.

[–] nkat2112@sh.itjust.works 34 points 1 day ago

"but forever more for having had you" - those are such beautiful words. And they're very appropriate in describing Dolly. Thank you for sharing that.

Damnit! Wrong 80 year old! Try again!

[–] redwattlebird@thelemmy.club 2 points 12 hours ago

They tried again and got Tim Curry 🙁

Not every 80YO has access to experimental medications and the nation's Treasury.

[–] raze2012@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago (1 children)

TBF Dolly probably could have. Dolly doesn't seem like the kind of person who'd care about that, though. And you have to remember her husband passed less than 2 years ago at 82YO.

She was a shining example of what a human could be. A life well lived.

Tonight, I raise a glass of red to you, Dolly, and drink it for all of us still here making the best of whatever scraps we got!

[–] Professorozone@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I wish the flags would fly at half mast for her instead of white supremacists. In these tough times it's really hard to lose a really good one like Dolly. I'm usually not that affected by celebrity news but this one hurts really bad. RIP Dolly.

This woman was either a literal saint or had the best PR team the world has ever seen

[–] MojoMcJojo@lemmy.world 55 points 1 day ago (3 children)

In my opinion she's up there with Bob Ross, Steve Irwin and Mr. Rogers.

LeVar Burton is already on that list for me too, love that he started up Reading Rainbow again as a podcast. It’s the library Dolly wanted, read read out loud

Lindsay Ellis good a recent video on Nebula analyzing her career in a way that really ends up working well as a post-mortem of Dolly's career. The conclusion is that Dolly Parton was a savvy business woman with good PR and a knack to stay out of politics, but she was also kind and charitable woman who could be the better person despite decades of boob jokes.

[–] eepydeeby@lemmy.blahaj.zone 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Lindsay even uploaded it to YouTube temporarily because she wants people who can't access Nebula to have access to her breakdown on Dolly's cultural context

Disappointing, but not surprising. Her husband of nearly 60 years died last year. Couples together that long tend not to last too well apart.

Damn not Ms Dolly. RIP to one of the few good famous people out there. Iconic and beloved by everyone.

If we had a normal world, we'd be having a National day of mourning here in the US.

While I'm not a fan of country music, Dolly was a legend.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 68 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Her music was never my taste, but she was a legend of a person.

Dolly Parton COVID-19 Research Fund eventually developed the Moderna COVID19 vaccine.

What a truly powerful and talented musician with an angelic voice and a urge to soul heartedly defend LGBTQ rights.

What a country goddess.

RIP "It should've been Trump!!!!!!! (or Unknown Hinson!!!!!!)"

Why couldn't someone else who is also 80 not die? Why and not them fuck the universe.

In this world, shipmates, sin that pays its way can travel freely and without a passport; whereas Virtue, if a pauper, is stopped at all frontiers.

The Dolly Parton youtube rabbit hole is deep and satisfying. Every death before his is tragic, but this is worst than most. Of all the songs that will be sung that day I would've loved to have heard hers.

[–] sirico@feddit.uk 39 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

We were talking about her last night after finding out she produced Buffy the Vampire Slayer

One of my favorite videos of her true icon https://youtu.be/Y3ardckySYY

[–] halezinflames@lemmus.org 46 points 1 day ago

Holy shit. RIP to an absolute legend.

I love Dolly. Went to Dollywood back in April. I would hate to see her estate picked apart and monetized, but you and I both know where this leads.
