Rules

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)

Canada was always more like classy Europeans than they were like materialistic americans. This is one union I wouldn't mind Canada joining.

As a Mexican, Americans are more like shitty Europeans, if Canadians are like classy Europeans. Just saying. I mean this by whatever their government pushes in their culture and whatever wars, regular americans (racists are not normal) are fine.

Ok, good idea, but European leaders are going to have to grow some balls.

As an American, I hope Canada transitions into the EU and the Euro. If things unravel further, I would like my life savings to be in Euros - and to have land access to a nation that uses them.

The thing that scares me about this though is all the anti privacy shit and on device scanning stuff the EU is doing. I hope they wouldn't try and implement VAT too.

[–] ragepaw@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

We already have a VAT. What do you think PST/GST/HST is?

I like Carney

[–] Grant_M@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 day ago

Love the idea of being closer with EU countries. Onward, PM Carney!

I doubt it will ever happen, but it would be extremely funny if Canada joined the EU, and the border between the US and Canada suddenly got loads of EU flags.

Here's the Problem with EU: Canada and EU negociated the CETA trade agreement from 2017. 10 of 27 EU members have yet to ratify. 9 years later. Parts of EU government work at glacial speed.

At least some Canadians seem to agree. I was honestly surprised by how positive the reaction was, even though I still think that Canadian membership would be a roadblock to the EU becoming a single, federated state.

[–] eutampieri@feddit.it 12 points 1 day ago (13 children)

I think that not even the EU is ready for a federation, as much as I wish it would

[–] Zamboni_Driver@lemmy.ca 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I don't understand this view.

The US is a collection of states which are federalized. The result is a federal government which increasingly controls the small details of life in these states. When the federal government is taken over by a hostile leader, all of the states suffer.

With seperate EU governments. Sure you may have a few states who are bad actors, but this is much better than all of the states being controlled by a bad actor.

[–] eutampieri@feddit.it 1 points 12 hours ago

Yes, that’s true.

However, we should first try to amend the rules, in order to avoid bad actors stalling decisions (like Hungary)

Then:

  1. Political parties: you don’t vote for S&Ds or PPE. You vote for CDU, Les Republicans (I guess?) or Forza Italia. The US votes R or D (with few exceptions). Would renaming and unifying parties a good idea? I don’t know, but it would create a political continuum and “the EU told us to do so” would cease to have any significant meaning. Here in IT it happens that politicians vote something at the EU level and the they lambast it at home. Also, it would be better if people have more importance to the European Parliament elections than they do now
  2. The Euro: why is Sweden gaming the rules. This is badly phrased, but they avoid to meet one of the five required parameters needed for € adoption because they had a referendum and it didn’t pass. DK I think has an opt out, so it’s different, PL, BG, RO still don’t meet the requirements but I think they eventually will adopt the Euro. Isn’t a single currency instrumental?
  3. The identity: as a person's age grows, it’s more likely that they lack a strong European identity (this is empirical, so take it with a grain of salt)
  4. A constitution: some progress was made in the early 2000s, but then the process stalled (because the French and the nordics referendums iirc)
  5. An army: this is controversial but sometimes pops up

This is what should be done, in my opinion, to bring EU member states closer and more tightly integrated. Also, I think that we can further integrate without risking to get into a USA 2025 situation

I've lived in Canada for a long while now and I have come to realize that the aspects I love the most about Canada come or are compatible with the European influence; by the same token, the odious bits I hate come from the dumpster fire down south...

After we go through this adjustment period, we will be much more aligned with Europe and I am actually very excited to help build and enjoy that future version of Canada

[–] oxideseven@lemmy.ca 1 points 15 hours ago

Agree so much. I've been saying something like this for a long time.

I welcome this change!

We can’t wait! So nice to have reliable partners in these hard times.

[–] huppakee@lemmy.world 60 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Europe needs more allies, right now they act as if they're too weak to speak up against US. The closer the capitalistic democracies are, the less politicians feel the need to play nice to the orange bully.

If you want to feel more European maybe replace your car based infrastructure with one more suitable for pedestrians and bicycles.

[–] Grant_M@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

Have you been to Canada?
