These papers are part of Post Media Group ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

63% of Post Media is owned by Chatham Asset Management, an american hedge fund based in New Jersey ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Allowing an american hedge fund to take over most Canadian newspapers was a huge mistake.

Fuck Stephen Harper and the conservatives for allowing Americans to buy our media. Never forget.

[โ€“] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Toronto Sun has always been right wing garbage Ontario blue collars love.

[โ€“] ieGod@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

Simple words for simple people, of course they lap it up.

[โ€“] BurgerBaron@quokk.au 10 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Liberal Party has been in power for much longer than I can excuse them ignoring this.

[โ€“] Jhex@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago (10 children)

What can be done after the sale? ban them?

I am actually asking, not trying to defend the liberals here (although I do think Harper is at fault here)

[โ€“] Malica@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

At the very least it needs to be disclosed with every post

What can be done after the sale? ban them?

Thatโ€™s not too far fetched for our liberal government, Bill C21 and their use of Order In Councils to ban firearms that have been available for sale in this country since the 70โ€™s.

All because someone who obtained firearms illegally, killed some cops in Nova Scotia and paraded around town dressed as one of the officerโ€™s on a mass-killing spree, folks who are licensed firearms owners have to suffer the consequence of this numbskulls actions, makes complete sense.

The culture around guns in Canada has been infected by American gun culture. Used to be guns were for hunting or maybe some hobby at a shooting range.

If your identity revolves around being a gun owner, not a hunter or some other hobby that uses guns, then you're in the group of people that is the the reason why guns need to be banned. The point of that culture isn't to consider a gun a tool that's part of a hobby, but a way to have power over others. People in that mindset are just one bad day away from using those guns to harm people.

Liberal Party has been in power for much longer than I can excuse them ignoring this.

Is that Canada's version of "thanks Obama" or "blame Biden"?

[โ€“] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 41 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Donโ€™t read the American press, theyโ€™re all capitulating and willfully excluding the truth on this trade war.

You can see it for yourself with their both-sidesing bs.

Le Devoir is fantastic. Great journalism and the writing is very good. If you want to level up your French itโ€™s worth it to subscribe.

[โ€“] christopher@lemmy.ca 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I wish I had paid attention in French class. I guess it's not too late to learn it again.

[โ€“] ghost_towels@sh.itjust.works 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Absolutely! CBC has a free app called Mauril! Itโ€™s paid for by our tax dollars, might as well use it.

Don't forget that even canadian owned media are often just repeating the propaganda put out by the united states. They also fall in line, and some on this list of canadian owned are this way.

[โ€“] jaemo@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

If you have it in your heart and wallet, please contribute to any of the Canadian owned outlets in any way you can.

Came here to say this. I want them to have a national edition - that I might subscribe to.

[โ€“] karawell@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

Please support your favorite newspaper.

Good journalism is expensive. When local newspapers and independent newsrooms collapse, communities face severe consequences: public corruption goes unchecked, local government spending balloons without oversight, and disinformation fills the vacuum.

[โ€“] Jhex@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

What about publications like The Walrus?

They are fully Canadian (AFAIK) but not quite a newspaper. I've been tempted to subscribe but their articles are usually fairly long and fleshed out (which is a good thing, I just don't always have the wherewithal to read them consistently)

[โ€“] castle88@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

We need to subscribe to newspapers again. Or at least pick up the weekend edition. That said, I wish there was a way I could pay x amount each month and get access to a handful of newspapers.

[โ€“] Jason2357@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago

Weekend editions are very much a great way to protect your mental health too. There really isnt more than a handful of stories a week that are still important a few days later and the rest of it is noise meant to keep you hooked on drama.

[โ€“] shittydwarf@piefed.ca 7 points 3 days ago

This shit should be banned

[โ€“] ivanvector@piefed.ca 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

PostMedia also owns SaltWire, a network of Atlantic community papers that includes the Halifax Chronicle-Herald, the Guardian (PEI), the Cape Breton Post, and the Telegram (Nfld).

[โ€“] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago

They also own the Moncton Times & Transcript, Saint John Telegraph Journal, and Fredericton Gleaner. Fucking Irvings sold them.

I think they probably own all of the newspapers in Atlantic Canada.

They gutted a lot of those newspapers, it's nearly killed local journalism. If it weren't for the CBC, there wouldn't be local journalism. Not good that it's a crown corporation that's the only one doing it, but it's better than having nothing.

[โ€“] betanumerus@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

The problem with the US owning these papers is that the US can prevent any criticism, objective or subjective, against the US. The US owners can prevent any ad or column that is not aligned with their own US-centric policies. Just like you'll never see an ad for EVs in the Irving Oil papers of the Maritimes.

[โ€“] psycotica0@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

What the fuck is The Chronical Herald? That sounds like a spoof in a cartoon, like Townsville or something.

[โ€“] betanumerus@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

Everyone knows it's local news for Metro City.

[โ€“] adespoton@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Who owns Quebecor Media now?

[โ€“] adespoton@lemmy.ca 15 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Replying to my own question:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quebecor

Itโ€™s owned by Quebecor Inc, a fully Canadian conglomerate traded on the TSX.

So if you arenโ€™t sure about the trustworthiness of an independent paper, thereโ€™s at least one fully Canadian media conglomerate besides CBC.

[โ€“] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago

Well the Thomson Family is Canadian. They're billionaires (so maybe not all that trustworthy) but they're Canadian. So that would Globe & Mail and Thomson-Reuters (though that would be international, not Canadian).

Itโ€™s still Pierre Karl Peledeau โ€ฆ but heโ€™s a billionaire and shouldnโ€™t be trusted

[โ€“] ZombieCyborgFromOuterSpace@piefed.ca 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The Gazette has such a huge influence on the anglophone Quebecois population. It's not only U.S. owned, it's also francophobic as hell.

[โ€“] undefinedValue@programming.dev -1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Francophobic is a wild claim. Youโ€™re going to have to provide proof or weโ€™re just going to assume youโ€™re a moron.

[โ€“] ZombieCyborgFromOuterSpace@piefed.ca -1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's a well known fact.

And you don't have to throw insults like that.

[โ€“] undefinedValue@programming.dev 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You were given an opportunity to provide proof, you didnโ€™t, youโ€™re a moron.

I don't see why I should answer someone so is disrespectful. I don't owe you anything.

Good list. Just wanted to add a thought about search engines as well. I've been using Kagi (it's a paid service) which has the option to customize searches to pin, raise, lower, or block sites. I have most of the post media sites blocked (as well as a lot of US media sites) and sites like thetyee, cbc, france24, etc set to raise to the top. No ads, ai turned off, search is a pleasant experience now.

Edit to add: it is American unfortunately, but it's the best search engine I've found. I've been operating under the adage "don't let perfect be the enemy of good" so after cutting ties with the vast majority of US companies, there are still a couple I send money to, like Kagi and Signal.

[โ€“] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

https://uruky.com/

The EU alternative to Kagi however I don't use paid searches so I can't comment on them.

[โ€“] imminent_nebula@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago

First I'm hearing of it, I'll give it a look. Thanks!

[โ€“] resin85@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Interesting that all of the major papers in Alberta are owned by post media. Are there any Canadian papers in Calgary or Edmonton? Or just right wing propaganda?

[โ€“] Typotyper@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago

I was thinking the same about Vancouver. Sun and Province both US owned
