Honestly, this is pure overreaction once again. It's well known that Google (and most non-OSS maps) show their information for your location based on the official sources for that location. The new, official name in the US for Lake Ontario is Lake America, like it or not. That this is stupid, unhinged and a fully retarded Trump take is true, but it's official for the American side. Canada could do the same and call it Lake Canada. It doesn't change how other countries call it, but any country could name it the way it wants.

This is not some Trumpist at Google doing insider work. This is not a conspiracy of Google supporting Trump. It's that Google maps is querying its data from some source and pushing it into maps, as they do with any country official source, if it's available.

Again, not defending Google's other shit or Trumps madness, but in this case they're showing the correct data. What's the issue here?

They could do the right thing and resist the fascism. You know, like how anybody with a platform and a moral compass would do. But I suppose expecting shitty companies to not be shitty is too much to ask.

Not Google's job to take on the US government, that was the role of the people

[–] ltxrtquq@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 hour ago

If you go to the USGS map, you see a banner that says

Per Secretarial Order 3453, Lake Ontario has been renamed to Lake America. The basemaps for this application are in the process of being

Presumably the sentence finishes if you aren't on mobile. Secretarial Order 3453 points you to Executive Order 14420, which is Delivering Gold Standard Childhood Vaccine Recommendations for Americans. I'm starting to think we don't have the best and brightest leading the country, you guys.

Screen shot from Google maps just now.

[–] whatstatersprecious@lemmy.world 2 points 25 minutes ago

Says Lake America for me. Depends where you are accessing Google

[–] OsrsNeedsF2P@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 hour ago

That was fast

Strong 8th grade vibes. "I asked Becky if she would be my girlfriend and she said no, so I crossed her name off my textbook cover and wrote BITCH over it. That'll show her! Why isn't she noticing what I wrote? Fuckin' Becky is such a bitch, she hasn't even looked at what I wrote over her name!"

They chickened out for the Gulf of Mexico, taking the coward's middle road.

(As seen from Sweden)

[–] frank@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 hour ago

Same for us down south

[–] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Yet but what the fuck 28007is this shit

[–] tazeycrazy@feddit.uk 2 points 50 minutes ago

Looks like someone has created a location like a business or public amity in the lake.

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 47 minutes ago

Yeah, fuck Google for so many reasons. I'm so sick of their shit. They sensor YouTube comments, too.

Google shows you different things based on your location

[–] louisinidus@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Normal in NZ

If you're bored, report missing information and say the lake is wrong and that this will cause conflicts with street signs and directions for actual locations. May as well give them a bunch of support tickets that waste some amount of resources

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 12 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

I’m sure after making this kind of change, they also have an automated system that redirects all related support tickets directly to the trash.

[–] Bourff@lemmy.world 10 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Google has been sending support requests directly to the trash for at least 20 years, nothing new here

[–] Pechente@feddit.org 2 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

They even seem to have some automations for it. The route to my old apartment was shown wrong and delivery drivers almost always popped up on the wrong side of my building behind my backyard. I tried to fix this but my edits were automatically rejected as being malicious. That’s one reason I don’t use Google Maps for navigation anymore.

Edit: Just checked again. It’s still wrong on Google Maps, still correct on Apple Maps.

Smallest of the 5 great lakes 😂

[–] KeithD@lemmy.nz 1 points 1 hour ago

Also, it's very definitely not Superior.

[–] BlueEther@no.lastname.nz 2 points 1 hour ago

I still have Ontario on desktop and the wifes android down here

[–] ironpangolin29@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Getting in a tiff about this lake shmake nonsense lends to its legitimacy.

Let's talk turkey. How about them heretofore Epstein files, now known as the trump files.

[–] silasmariner@programming.dev 1 points 47 minutes ago

Actually it's spelled Turkïye now

[–] mundane@piefed.world 9 points 3 hours ago

Google has always shown the local official name for everything. Borders and names can vary a lot depending on where you are from. I still see lake Ontario since I'm not from the US.

Lake Ontario

[–] eremophila@lemmy.zip 10 points 3 hours ago

google maps Australia

[–] roserose56@lemmy.zip 5 points 3 hours ago

Nothing changed from my side, still lake Ontario.

[–] manuallybreathing@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 hour ago (2 children)

Pretty sure that lake had a name before anglos rocked up and started calling it Lake Ontario, bud

leave a bad review on for the lake, or even the white house if it upsets you 🤣

[–] tazeycrazy@feddit.uk 4 points 53 minutes ago

According to wiki

The name Ontario is likely derived from the Iroquoian word Kaniatarí:io or Oniatarí:io meaning "lake of shining waters" or "beautiful lake".[10] It has been in use since at least 1639.[11] During French colonial Canada, various other names for the lake were also used, including Frontenac and St. Louis, though Ontario ultimately became the common term.[11]

So a rare use of the given name by the local people. The french had a go of a rebrand but it didn't stick.

[–] silasmariner@programming.dev 1 points 42 minutes ago

Ontario pretty obviously doesn't have a romance etymology my dude
