I don't usually swear on Lemmy, but fuck Unity.

I don't think any studio could predict they'd need to throw out 6 years work on a full game rewrite, nearing completion, but abruptly rendered financially unfeasible because of a greedy engine developer...

Hope this studio is able to keep going.

Unity did roll back a lot of, but not all, the particularly bad stuff with the new pricing. That said I wouldn't trust them to not push it again once people have normalized the current version so I don't blame them for bailing. I'd hope a full rewrite meant they also put work into making a lot of the new code engine agnostic but that only gets you so far when recreating levels, assets, etc. can be such a big investment. I hope they can keep going too it saddens me to see this

Fucking hell, screw Unity. So many indie game projects got shafted or cancelled because of this, it's crazy. The devs that could, jumped ship to Unreal or Godot or something else, but the damage is done, and the trust is never to return. Not unless the entire heads tbat own Unity roll.

I didn't know much about Unity when the mess started last fall. I did, however, recognize the Unity ad platform on mobile games. They are distinct in that they are willing to advertise absolutely anything for anybody - including phishing apps apparently published by organized crime syndicates.

So for ALL of their behaviour, both ad and engine related, I say Fuck Unity.

What a weird game to see here

Can’t say anything good about it, it’s just weird that anyone paid attention to a post by it
