I wasn't sure where to post this, but it seems like Tildes is pretty much dead now. This is why decentralized is the only possible good future.

Hopefully all the users move to Lemmy/PieFed/Mbin

I liked Tildes.

Then I got temp-banned for suggesting that hitting Nazis with your car is fine.

That was the last time I used Tildes.

Sorry D. My family has a deep tradition of fighting Nazis and anyone who tells me I shouldn't, it a Nazi apologizer.

I can understand explicit calls to violence being disallowed. As happy I'd be if all Nazis just didn't wake up one day, we don't need vigilantes going around deciding who to commit attempted murder against

[–] zikzak025@lemmy.world 27 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

You know, that is a fair take. It's easy to pass judgment, but less easy to trust that everyone else would pass the same judgment on the same people you do.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago (3 children)

When people no longer trust the justice system to provide justice, they end up relying on alternatives. Is it the ideal solution? Obviously not. However, I'm not going to sit here and say the French resistance was wrong because they didn't have the backing of their government. There's obviously a gray area where anyone would agree it's acceptable and not.

Vigilantes are welcome to fight Nazis. Full stop.

[–] captcha_incorrect@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (9 children)

We want to fight Nazis, on that we agree. Then who are these people? We have a court system, an agreed upon authority to make such decisions.

Vigilante1 thinks Mister X is a Nazi, Vigilante2 does not think so. Who is right? Who decides here? I say a court does and this is why I think we can't just go around and murder people.

It's basically another tradition for reddit clones to surreptitiously setup beachheads for nazis. The ultimate effect of that is the site kills itself before it can ever become popular.

I've seen this pattern enough over the years. Reddit is the only OG that managed to succeed in spite of welcoming nazis.

Now that "hiding your power level" isn't a thing anymore, they can't help but run openly amok, which drives people away. They stayed in their own festering corners of reddit until 2016.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 1 week ago

because it wasnt inhabited by them first.

[–] ms_lane@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Reddit wasn't popular until Digg dugg its own grave.

[–] magnue@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

You deserved the ban.

[–] ranzispa@mander.xyz 3 points 1 week ago (4 children)

Please, do not murder nazis. They are not in any position of power. If you meet one of them in isolation, try to talk with them and understand their reasons, then explain your ideas.

If you meet a group of them, have a beer with them and have a chat.

If you meet a group of them attempting to perpetrate violence, call to your network of contacts, organize immediately and beat the shit out of them.

[–] piskertariot@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Complete disagree.

Displaying nazi imagery is a choice. A choice that should only be met with immediate violence lest they learn that it is ok.

[–] ranzispa@mander.xyz 5 points 1 week ago (3 children)

As you can see from my message above, I'm not completely against violence.

But if that's the way you conduct your life, I'm afraid you'll soon end up in jail.

If that is not the case then you either never see nazis, which is not so common these days, or you're speaking empty words.

I had those kind of confrontations which end up in people picking up sticks and taking out knives with congregations of neofascists in order to protect the integrity of places, in periods in which those were being targeted and it was quite common to hear someone from your circle of friends had gotten murdered while getting back home.

What are you talking about?

Nazi's inherently don't adhere to the social contract. Do not run the nazi bar. A seen nazi is a punched Nazi on sight.

[–] mysticalone@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I think it would be better if you apologized and stopped providing unsolicited suggestions.

First time I’ve even heard of it

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 17 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I liked tildes, i just liked the fediverse more.

Tildes tended to have long, serious discussions. The fediverse had oneninetysix.

There's probably people that still use tildes regularly and like the vibes. It's good to have choice, and small to medium social websites existing alongside each other.

[–] zod000@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I still use it daily, but it feels like deimos sure signaled a death knell with his post. Maybe that was his intention, I don't know.

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 week ago

It certainly signals a lack of future investment which doesn't bode well

[–] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It was dead on arrival, and they made sure it never became anything more than that by gate keeping.

I've been a member for years and I check it maybe once a month because nothing of note ever happens there so it's not worth my time.

Tildes killed itself.

[–] PancakesCantKillMe@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Shoot, I forgot all about Tildes until this post. I had an account and even kicked in to support them. Got sidetracked by The Outside and Lemmy and just never went back. I wonder if my account still works....LOL, it does! I'm back on Tildes! lol ...eh....maybe I'll go to The Outside instead...

[–] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Sadly theres nothing there to see or do.

[–] Die4Ever@retrolemmy.com 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Tell them to join Lemmy lol, now seems like a good time for them

[–] PancakesCantKillMe@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Lol, well I just spent a few minutes browsing and reading a thread or two. The Riviera Kid isn't far off: There isn't a ton happening there. But, with that said, the discussions being had in those threads seem pretty involved. I don't see much of the old reddit (and sometimes on Lemmy now) low-value insipid posts like: "This!" or "Came here to say that!" There are fairly long, multi-paragraph, drawn-out conversations with some thoughtful replies. I skimmed over a few as they were long and I am not invested in the topic (at this juncture). But it is interesting to see some cerebral discussions without the random silly stuff. Mind you, I do enjoy the silly stuff too. Ergo why I am here. Viva la Lemmy!

[–] cabbage@piefed.social 4 points 1 week ago

It's funny to do a Ctrl+F for Lemmy in the thread linked by OP. They all collectively seem to agree that the threadiverse is a bunch of weirdos and that it's only good for memes and brainrot.

I'm not saying they're wrong, but it's true that they do seem to have a culture for lengthyness.

[–] zod000@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 week ago

Tildes has a different vibe that lemmy. I am on both sites, and there is a reason I still go there. Most lemmy drama and bullshit wouldn't be tolerated there. it is intentionally a slower, more polite community. It just isn't as larger or "happening" as lemmy, and it certainly never will be.

[–] emb@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (3 children)

It's always strange to me that software can never be complete or mature, it's straight from 'getting new features' to 'dead'. Not picking on the comment in OP, the announcement post reads like that too mostly. I get software requires some level of maintenance, but I wish we treated feature-complete as a good thing, something to celebrate.

Anyway, it was also weird to me how Tildes didn't seize the moment with the Reddit drama a couple years ago. As I recall, they just weren't trying to be the target of that migration. That was the first time I'd heard of it. Seems a nice place, from all my impressions of it.

[–] Die4Ever@retrolemmy.com 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

There can be security issues though. And I think it sounds like it won't be growing from here, for social media that means it probably won't take long to shrink a lot. If the current feature set and UX didn't attract a huge userbase, then keeping it the same certainly won't help.

If it was an offline video game or software then it would be different.

[–] emb@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Security issues for sure, that's what I mean to acknowledge by saying it takes some level of maintenance.

But like, the feature set and UX don't have to keep improving forever, IMO. The draw of something like this should be the community, the humans you interact with.

[–] aramis87@fedia.io 6 points 1 week ago

When I left reddit, I asked for accounts on both tildes and kbin. Except tildes was onboarding people in batches, so I'd been active on kbin for like a week before I could create my tildes account, and I just never got momentum over there because of it

[–] jaygray91@piefed.zip 2 points 1 week ago

Debatable, but video games of old can be considered feature complete software. Or a lot of old software from back then when they have to be sold once with little to no support.

[–] craigers@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

I assumed at first this was some consortium that just governed the use of the ~ symbol. They meet once a year to decide if they want to add or remove the ~ from any letters.

[–] undeadotter@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 week ago

I used Tildes quite a bit for about a year or so, then dropped off in favour of Lemmy. I actually went back for the first time in ages the other week, saw this post and it immediately reminded me why I left.

The reason this seems to have been posted is because of people calling for new tools to moderate or curate their experience and Demios is basically saying these requests are pointless because they're never going to be implemented.

The people asking for these tools seem to be identifying a fundamental problem with Tildes but because of the way it's structured I don't think anything suggested would actually make much of a difference.

One problem is that Demios is the one and only moderator and this is apparently never going to change. This means that problematic content can be slow to be removed, and on the flip side seemingly benign posts can be locked or deleted without explanation. People on Tildes who are happy with this call it the 'benevolent dictator' model, and it's incredibly frustrating unless your views align with those of the one and only mod. This inevitably means that the community self selects to be of a similar mindset.

The other major problem as I see it is the overall structure. Coming from Reddit (or Lemmy) it looks like it is broken up into smaller communities that you can select from the sidebar. But in fact these function more like tags, because everyone is subbed to and can post under any of them. This manifests with the life.women tag which was introduced when I was active on Tildes. Initially this felt like a positive thing, and a place for women to discuss issues relevant to them. However, it's impossible to curate who or what can be posted under that tag so what you ended up with lots of men arguing in the comments about women's life experiences and no way to block them. (Compare this to WomensStuff on Lemmy which manages to be inclusive while remaining a safe space.)

Tildes works a select group of people, but for everyone else I think it just ends up a frustrating experience.

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 week ago

This is the full text of the post. I don't take it to mean "dead", as that isn't the opposite of growing. Despite what venture capitalists want people to think.

It is interesting to see that Deimos thinks the failed. I think that speaks more to his aspirations of what tildes could be, not a disparagement of the current community.

I will always remember tildes as the first reddit alternative I actually liked; that wasn't an alt-right clone. Deimos showed it was possible, and the threadiverse picked up the baton and is still running further.

I've been assuming that this is fairly apparent since nothing significant has changed here in years now, but I suppose it's best to be explicit.

There is no intention to do anything like:

  • Actively attempt to attract more users
  • Implement new functionality or change existing functionality
  • Change the site's structure
  • Give any other people access to moderation/admin abilities or control of the site

Or anything else of a similar level. The site has basically been in "minimum maintenance mode" for a long time, and I do not plan to start investing more time in it or otherwise trying to reinvigorate or reinvent it. I recognize that a lot of information and documentation on the site does not reflect this, but almost all of it was written aspirationally nearly 10 years ago, and those aspirations failed. To be clear, I definitely don't consider Tildes a failure—I'm proud and happy that we were able to create a small community that people (mostly) like being a part of. I enjoyed building it, and it's great that the community has managed to sustain itself for so long, but it's not the same as the goal that most of that writing had in mind. I should remove or update a lot of it, but there are very few new users and almost everyone here already knows how things work.

I'm certainly happy to continue keeping Tildes running while people want to keep hanging out here, but you should only do that if you are satisfied with the state of the site. If you are unhappy with Tildes' current functionality, structure, design, userbase, culture, or any other major aspect, you should probably look for a different community (or start one, anyone can!). You should not pin your hopes on any major changes happening here.

[–] vogi@piefed.social 6 points 1 week ago

I really like the clean UI, more curated list of community and focus on discussions. Many want to emulate reddit and their niche comms. But thats just impossible with the user base we have on here right now. I would prefer having just a handful of generic comms like. technology, food, meta, science, entertainment... still really enjoy it on here its the best attempt at decentralised social media.

[–] moendopi@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Is this similar no related to the tildeverse/ tilde servers (e.g., tilde.club?)

This is the first I've heard of this, but I'm on two different tilde servers. I basically do everything command line there, plus they have Gemini support.

[–] zod000@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago

It's not part of the fediverse, it's been around for several years and works similarly though.

[–] pastermil@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

This is why decentralized is the only possible good future.

They run on open source code, last I checked. Tho they probably are not connected to the Fedi.

[–] Die4Ever@retrolemmy.com 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

it doesn't have any federation support, it's centralized

[–] pastermil@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

That's a shame... It looked so promising (at least on paper).

[–] vinnymac@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

This is a weird thread to share this in, but whatever. I’m working on an alternative platform based on At Protocol, it’s called https://caterpilla.rs/

Still early days, haven’t open sourced it (yet), but plan to. Just a fun side project for me.
