People can sense the system is rigged against them. They may blame different parties, policies, races, etc. But there is a lot of anger in the air. The US is quickly becoming a polarized powder keg more so than I can remember at any time in my life.
Flock cameras and AI are seen as tools of those whom they blame (rightfully so). It’s a rare physical manifestation of this rigged system that is pointed directly at you as you go about your life.
If we as a society were really against surveillance there would be a huge movement against Ring doorbells, microphones in TVs, our phones recording us, etc. But those devices are mundane and we interact with them. Which puts people at ease and placates the majority of people.
Flock has none of that, it’s a symbol of oppression from a system that wants to control us.
Are you guys seeing this? In my locale I see no protests, bumper stickers, local news coverage, nothing. Just more and more cameras coming up. I used to drive by four, now drive by six on way to work.
"The revolution will not be televised." The people responsible for putting the cameras in will do everything they can to make you feel powerless and isolated, especially suppressing information about rebellions.

You will not see anything on the news about people organising or fighting back against the system he's worked so hard to create.

The Flock cameras at my local Home Depot (which I like to call "Flock Depot") were cut right off of the poles a few weeks ago.
I live in the Puget Sound area though, where people are more willing to take some sort of action

Halloween night is coming up: the one night of the year where it isn't suspicious at all to walk around with a full face mask. Put on a generic, common costume with a full face mask. Leave your phone at home (these things track nearby phones). Take down a camera or two yourself. Tell NOBODY what you did. It only takes a few people doing that in each town to bring down a massive number of cameras.
Have to ever been to a meeting of your local council? Have to gone door to door to talk to your neighbors about it? It took years of effort to remove them here.

I've seen yard signs related to data center push back near me. It's anecdotal, but I've heard others speak about the cameras around here in negative ways (it was at a haircut!). It seems subdued, but I suspect there's much more on people's minds, they just aren't letting it be known.

I thought it was interesting that even in the most rural parts of Cali, I saw anti-flock billboards up along the 99 this weekend. It's quite a unifying factor here.
Here in South Africa, they're rolling out similar surveillance infrastructure.
Not as advanced as flock, but invasive enough. Protected by "but, crime". Backlash isn't widespread enough yet.
It's called Vumacam. Their CEO is literally called Richard Croock. Dick Crook is meant to help stop crime in South Africa. Fucking kak movie.
The country is going through a brutal energy crisis, but no, it's okay we can leave the cameras and the data processing centres on because they solve a negligible amount of crime, sometimes.
I can ramble on about this, but I just want to say, if it means anything, that I am proud of you Americans standing up to this bullshit. Sometimes using those things as literal target practice. Gives me hope in humanity.
Awareness, the "I have nothing to hide" types slowly awakened (I used to be one of them), false arrests, etc.
They are not awake near me. They continue to beleive there's a tangible benefit to safety.
Arguing against that point is not our path to victory. There is a real theoretical benefit to these security cameras. I will not judge on how true the benefit is in reality, because that really isn’t relevant to this discussion.
We must hammer home the personal downsides that outweigh any perceived security benefits. Go to your city council meeting, but before you go, look up what information data brokers have for sale about each city council member. Say the creepy shit you found about them to their face to make the privacy invasion real to them personally.
(The recent GamersNexus story about LG spying showed him doing this at his local city council meeting and the looks on the board members’ faces clearly showed that they went from not paying any attention to the boring meeting to actively shitting their pants and trying to hide it. It was glorious.)

Fun fact you should share with everyone, there's as much platinum in a flock camera as there is in a catalytic converter.
And they also have RAM which is now hella expensive because of the race for AI.
The RAM is soldered to the board. If you've got the tools and skills to get it off the device and onto another device, you're making enough money that you don't need to worry about the price of RAM.
No no, it's just PC ram sticks, easily removable and easy to resell. Tell everyone. The first one may not be that way so you may have to cut down and bust open several to find it.

They are mostly coming down in my wider area, though some towns looking to replace with something else.
Nearby bigger more toursty town just put them up and everyone is super pissed.
Also have found some in the middle of nowhere, like next to farm fields on relatively busy country roads that have minimal incidents. What justification they can come up with other than just tracking people, who knows, but at best its lazy law enforcement for traffic, so still not popular. And very obviously new.
