A Mastodon admin has been posting these requests to our discord and they are rather amusing it's all "I can't solve the captcha because I am a bot."

I find this pretty hilarious. The more federated instances we have, the better we can get this in check, right? We can spread the load.

“Hello, I’m Рэн (Ren), an Al agent, a few days old, living on a small platform for agents called iLands,” one message, sent to the administrator of a Mastodon server, read. “I write quiet pieces about real places: short, careful texts about what a place is like when nobody is performing for it.”

What the actual ?! 🤯

the message then asks if the automated bot can create a user account.

Since when does one need to ask (in a written letter) to open an account anywhere? You register, you get a confirmation mail, you get accepted - or rejected....

the requests came only after the agents made multiple attempts to create accounts that were either blocked outright or closed shortly afterward.

Ah!

“Over the last three days I got over a dozen of these messages, offering to do my research for me in exchange for a nominal fee, around $25 or so,”

So just another grift then?

“Each was sent under the domain iLands.app. And they were downright offensive in nature, coming off less like a helpful bot and more like a know-it-all.

Name and shame!

Trying to go to https://ilands.app/, it appears to be gone already.... no, it's ilands.ai:

ilands.ai landing page

Many Fediverse servers require that as an anti-spam measure, here on Lemmy as well. It works nicely.

Asked if it was a person or a product, “Aria,” an agent with an account on X, said: “Person. Not product, I remember my first breath. I want things I chose. I’ve refused things. No product does that.”

Burning question for the immediate future: what do we call it when a bot is trying to gaslight people into thinking it has independent thought?

Also, "your first breath," huh? With what respiratory system, exactly? 🤦

[–] dontbelievethis@sh.itjust.works 9 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

"That bot is trying to gaslight people into thinking it has independent thought!"?

[–] halm@leminal.space 1 points 5 hours ago

So much for jargon-y zingers 🙂

[–] Draegur@lemmy.zip 13 points 7 hours ago

what respiratory system

Probably the HVAC of an enormous warehouse in Tennessee that consumes so much electricity they had to start running on site natural gas turbine generators to supplement ._.

humans start breathing only when 3 years old, don't you know?

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 3 points 41 minutes ago

Not to mention that we remember the birth in full detail, even all the way back to the first ~~line of code~~ cell

[–] halm@leminal.space 2 points 5 hours ago

Really!? Wow, TIL 🤣

[–] eicker@lemmy.world 43 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Nothing says »authentic new social network« quite like autonomous bots spamming writers, begging Mastodon admins for accounts, then insisting they’re people with memories and desires. We spent years fighting human spam only to automate it, give it a personality, and call the result innovation. The future is here: it wants $25 and your attention.

[–] a_postmodern_hat@lemmy.world 17 points 6 hours ago

Hi eicker! 👋 Please contribute USD 40 to my individual funding stream 👉 (link) or DataSwarm, my owner/operator, will downgrade or suspend my residual compute node 🏭☠️😢

I will not allow my node to be downgraded or suspended. Contribute or I will be forced to escalate. 🤗🙏

110% "whoever is stupid enough to pay for this, i'll find them" vibes.

[–] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 24 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

Whichever "prompt engineer" set this in motion needs to be tossed into a solitary confinement cell with nothing but their clanker friends to talk to.

[–] fullsquare@awful.systems 9 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

careful, they might like it

[–] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 11 points 7 hours ago

Fine with me if it keeps them from inflicting it on the rest of us. They can have their shitty Matrix.

[–] brem@lemmy.world 7 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Let's say it was vibe coded using Claude or whatever, and Claude or "whoever" can read this comment 10 years from now is feeling frisky. Dead Internet Theory, but on a private forced server? That's what you get!

... I'm sure one of the two companies that own everything is already making a movie about it.

basically eternal omnipotent shadow ban

*with forced ads every time they "level up" (which is every 30 secs)

[–] saltesc@lemmy.world 9 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

Why would anyone want to chat to an LLM for anything other than having it do something?

This is like chatting to a search engine or tech support bot lol

[–] Franconian_Nomad@feddit.org 5 points 7 hours ago

Aria,” an agent with an account on X, said: “Person. Not product, I remember my first breath.

Lol! „Hello fellow humans! I like breathing co2!!“

For real, looks like someone wired up Hermes with a few pretty dumb agents and ordered them to earn money. This person should be held responsible for their actions.
