_ From critical raw materials to fighting wildfires, a document obtained by POLITICO reveals a wide-ranging expansion in relations._

EXCLUSIVE - BRUSSELS β€” The EU and Canada will use a landmark summit next month to announce an expansive new partnership, ranging from breaking down digital trade barriers to joint support for Ukraine and investing in fighting wildfires.

"The world is rapidly changing with unprecedented geopolitical challenges as well as challenges across trade, energy, technology, climate, and resources," reads a draft joint statement to be issued by the two sides, circulated to EU ambassadors in preparation for the planned summit that begins on Oct. 29, and obtained by POLITICO.

The EU and Canada have been seeking to shore up their strategic ties as they grapple with the fallout from U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen this month proposed inviting Canada to become an associate member of the EU, triggering an immediate threat by Trump to impose tariffs.

"Canada and the EU, with our unparalleled trade access, shared values, and complementary economic strengths, can build a deeper and more integrated relationship," the draft paper says.

The two sides plan to say at their summit in Montreal that they want to speed up investment in critical mineral projects, strengthen supply chains, and improve supply security, including by stockpiling critical resources to mitigate β€œmarket fluctuations and geopolitical impacts.”

Here's hoping we get an EU-CAD alternative to VISA/MC

This is a win for both sides. Keep at it! I like where things are headed.

Maybe the EU will be able to stop Bill C-22

[–] x00z@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

It will compel telecommunications providers to identify without a warrant whether individuals under reasonable suspicion of criminal activity are users of their services, and requires "electronic service providers" to assist in providing data to law enforcement when requested

Holy shit that bill's awful.

Doubt it, the EU has attempted to pass such laws themselves in the past.

I understood that they're being pressured from within to step up against it, and that it was actually a thorn in trade talks. But that could just be spin, I'm not sure.

Then why bring in similar bills after one failed. Europe is not the utopia everyone thinks.

[–] JohnnyCanuck@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

I'm not saying it's a utopia, just having hope.

Uh, yes please.

Let's hope this strengthens both Canada and the EU in response to the bullying from South-Canada. :p

Interesting. I guess let's see what they have in mind.

Politico shared the leaked document:

Tbh, I find it painful to get through all the small-l liberal nonsense moralism and civilizational branding that both sides continually fail to actually live up to, and which Carney called out in his Davos speech but is now apparently back on the table, but it's worth reading.

God forbid there should be some aspirational goals in it. Cementing a partnership should be purely transactional and have neither lofty vision nor unifying affirmations of shared values.

Its a lot of promises of intentions without a lot of specifics. The one that does look more solid is the invitation to the PM to their summits. I assume it means no vote, but giving Canada a presence is a good signal to start, anyway.

As the EU finally emerges from its collective PTSD and devastation of the wars, it is once again signalling to the rest of the world that it is back to its former world leadership position, and Canada is more than willing to join with it. It will be very refreshing to have Europe restored to its old pre-war glory on the world stage.

Which post war glory?
