Yes, bow to me, the grand architect of geocities Dragon Ball Z pages.

[–] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 1 points 11 minutes ago

[–] XopherH@lemmy.world 7 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

I would like to deny this, but I can't.

[–] GrindingGears@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 hour ago

The only thing I wish I could deny is the 40+ part

[–] lordziv@lemmy.nz 10 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

I personally blame the iPhone. Shit all started going downhill from then

[–] GrindingGears@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Nope. You got the time period right, but I would like to posit it’s when they started letting our Parents, drunk uncles and dumb ass aunties on Facebook.

The problem always has, and always will be, Facebook.

[–] combomeal@lemmy.zip 2 points 28 minutes ago

I completely agree. Should have never taught the geriatric community how to access FB

In our defense, corporations ruined the world wide web. It still has so much potential if they weren't involved.

[–] GrindingGears@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

It’s been corporate the entire time. The rise of the www literally fueled a global economic bubble.

[–] lefaucet@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 hour ago

The bubble was because of speculative finance assholes ripping each other off by pointing at the thin vaneer of corporate windows built on the tools that were mostly developed by the military, universities, CERN and countless nerds' computer rooms and garages.

[–] naught101@lemmy.world 0 points 51 minutes ago

Corporations are made of people, and people more broadly let them gain power. That doesn't seem like a defence, it's just a description of our failure.

[–] hactar42@lemmy.ml 7 points 3 hours ago (3 children)

Hell yeah, my geocities Nine Inch Nails fan site helped build the Internet

[–] dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 1 points 10 minutes ago

Indeed. You were up above it.

I had a geocities page all about skateboarding. I’d give you the url, but I neither remember it, nor doubt your phone is wide enough for a url that long

[–] FilthyHands@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 hours ago

Will you join my webring?

[–] Nemo@slrpnk.net 10 points 4 hours ago

[–] altphoto@lemmy.today 6 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

Mario teaches typing and the Oregon Trail on 5" disks were just a dream.

[–] GrindingGears@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 hour ago

Kings Quest 4 on like 8 disks I think?

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

5.25" you absolute philistine

[–] TomMasz@piefed.social 17 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

It was supposed to make everything better, we were sure of it.

We were horribly wrong. Sorry.

[–] Ftumch@lemmy.today 7 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

We built it first on PHP and later Node.js. It was clear from the start we had no idea what we were doing.

[–] Doom@lemmy.world 53 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Fuck that. I don't regret it. We built the world wide web from nothing for everyone and had it fucking stolen by rich assholes who put our community resources WE developed behind ads and paywalls. Unlike those uncreative hacks we have the talent to take it back.

[–] naught101@lemmy.world 1 points 34 minutes ago

The bit we should regret is that we let the rich corporates steal it.
