Wikipedia is probably the only thing that was successful on the internet and didn't turn evil.

Stop whining about ONE add, and solve your problem.

Step one: install add blocker. Step two donate to wiki.

These aren't even ads. They're community announcements. There's no ad on Wikipedia.

Wikipedia didn't turn evil? The website by Wikimedia who hired an union busting firm when their workers tried to unionize?

XD

Why donate? They have way more money than they need currently

[–] Cherry@piefed.social 9 points 3 days ago

And enough to threaten their staff contributors too.

Wiki leadership have gone all corporate lately. They won’t recognise a workers union and seem to be moving to a more authoritative admin.

They have tons of money and enjoy a throne on information distribution. Sounds a bit like the church when I say it like that.

imagine being mad about one banner asking you to donate to the greatest website...

[–] azimir@lemmy.ml 8 points 3 days ago

I have a an automatic $2/mo donation to Wikipedia set up. Of all of the sites I'm more than willing to support with hard currency, it's the one.

$2 isn't much, but if we all do it, it'll keep the best online resource for general information we have on the planet operating. Very worth it.

Your articles? This sounds really entitled.

[–] UiUiUiUiUi@piefed.nl 4 points 3 days ago

"ad" as in ... hey here's a distraction to make it harder for you to focus on what you were actually just about to do

[–] decolo@piefed.social 2 points 3 days ago

They're softening us up for actual paid ads in the future, count on it

[–] funkajunk@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

Should have donated that $5

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 1 points 3 days ago

That's not an ad, it's a promotion. To be an ad it'd have to be another party playing for that to be displayed.
