Lovecraft Mythos - Cosmic Horror
H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos is a shared universe far larger and more terrifying than that of humanity, where ancient, malevolent beings known as the Great Old Ones slumber in the depths of space or time. After Lovecraft's death, the Mythos has been expanded and developed by many authors, including August Derleth, Clark Ashton Smith, and Robert E. Howard. These and many other authors have helped to flesh out the Mythos into a rich and complex Dark Universe.

The Great Old Ones aren't monsters with tentacles, horns, or fangs. They don't have gaping maws or grasping claws.
They are trans-dimensional beings. The horror of them is that their very existence is so far outside what the tiny human mind can comprehend that simply looking upon them drives men mad.
Cthulhu in this picture has no more tentacles, horns, or fangs than Lovecraft's drawing of Cthulhu.

Thus proving that Lovecraft had gazed upon them and was driven mad!
To be fair, Lovecraft would have been driven mad by the mere sight of a black man and white woman holding hands. It probably didn't take a lot of imagining back then before arriving at "beyond comprehension".
