I was hoping the DDR 5 I purchased last year would last 5 to 10 years - now im praying for it.

Great, lets go back a technology because of fucking AI that no one has asked for

DDR5 is kind of annoying for other reasons than just cost. Like not being able to mix kits at all and having to deal with preboot voltage training and shit. I’ve basically gotten used to it myself, but it still trips a lot of people. I was hoping they’d smooth shit over with DDR6, but I guess they’re just going backwards instead for cost reasons.

Great, lets go back a technology because of ~~fucking AI that no one has asked for~~ a handful of billionaires who decided to try to buy a monopoly on a technology without any thought about the damage done to the world economy, environment and labor force.

Focusing on the technology instead of the people is misdiagnosing the problem and providing a smoke screen for the actual human beings making these destructive decisions.

Linear algebra isn't building data centers, Elon Musk is.

Good call. IF they price it cheap enough.

IMO they should resurrect Optane for AI use cases. I'd really prefer this to be contained to niche SSD than general RAM

For gaming this is completely viable. I am running a 5070, an 5950x and 64 Gigs of DDR4 and play on 1440p, and haven't yet had any title which i couldn't run maxed out or close to it in graphics quality. Without Framegen, i am pretty much always at least above 60 FPS in the most demanding titles on the market, which framegen can then push to a comfortable 90+ if wanted. Anything a bit older or simply not so demanding i normally have to limit the frame rate so i do not waste a bunch of power.

I think gpu would be the bottleneck for you. I have 3950x and couldn’t find a game that would utilize more than 25% of that beast.

Maybe because I still run 2080 super which is fairly good with 4k gaming (with 125% frame buffer scaling so technically 3072×1728).

Unfortunately most games are largely single threaded - 25% means nothing if single thread bottlenecks. I had 3950x and it was becoming bottleneck above 90-100 fps in cyberpunk 2077. Which is fine in most cases. Just don't bundle it with 5090 because card won't be fully utilized.

I really loved that CPU for ECO mode. 65W, no in game slow down, and ~20% slower in all 16 core workloads. Silent, great for overnight work like mass 4k footage transcoding. IMO best semi professional CPU of its time.

Really depends on the game. SupCom, EnNatRev, Anno1800, etc

Yeah, it actually is. It's better performancewise than my old 3070Ti (mainly because 8G VRAM nowadays really tanks performance at higher resolutions) but i do not have the necessary cash to upgrade in the current market.

I do a shitton of heavy compression/decompression, which is why i opted for the 16-core one (because this is a really good use case for it, and it is the maximum my mainboard supports either way - that took me flashing my bios, then replace the cpu, and then flash again immediately after to ensure everything worked fine - can't even place the old CPU back in, and no way to downgrade) - if taking the fact into account that this platform is pretty old, it still is in the upper middle part of the pack in gamersnexus benchmarks regarding these operations, and i haven't had any game yet that really was cpu limited outside of how long turns take in strategy games.

So I suppose not even DDR4 prices will normalize in the next 3 years, thank you Intel.

I would have expected someone to adapt the fancy new HBM memory to traditional PC architectures instead.

So anyways anyone know any good ebay sellers for pc parts?
