Expected a joke.

Discovered a tragedy.

Also a neat device.

NY, get your heads out of your asses and just do it. Get it done! 100% of trucks! Big fines for it not being there! Go!

Hell, this should just be all urban areas in the world.

Before I opened this and saw the video, I thought it was going to be an indicator light.

Toothless laws to let businesses save some money at the cost of people’s live

[–] Snapz@lemmy.world 10 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

The dude's priority list at the end...

  1. The poor truck driver (who was non-compliant)
  2. The company's insurance
  3. The person being killed by the truck

Good video but a terrible opening

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 49 points 1 day ago

Excuse me, excuse me, but this is a clearly unscripted random interaction with a fellow probably human.

…yeah, it soured me on the rest as well, although it sounds like the idea itself is good. heh

Only Billy Eichner is allowed to do that

Why the fuck are they giving exemptions to vehicles that are constantly on city roads?

[–] aramis87@fedia.io 15 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It sounds like it's something they can only require them on vehicles whose companies have contracts with the city. If true, I'd assume that the exempted trucks aren't hauling away city waste - maybe construction debris or something like that.

[–] hypnicjerk@piefed.social 11 points 1 day ago

not much the city can do about that - the state handles motor vehicle regulations.

[–] 0x0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 day ago

I thought you couldn't be right. Whelp.

... requires large vehicles in the City Fleet and in City contracted vehicles be equipped with safety enhancing side guards ...

[–] baines@lemmy.cafe 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

why were people given religious covid exemptions

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 5 points 1 day ago

Because society caters to stupid people.

Obviously the exemptions for the vehicles was money.

I hate how we as a society keep catering to stupid people and companies when it comes to basic safety practices.

Two types of people in the world: those who don't think about the need for this and those who spent time on liveleak.

[–] GottaHaveFaith@fedia.io 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

there's no liveleak anymore. Literally tried it yesterday D:

[–] Hiro8811@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

I've heard some guy named Hagseth is bringing it back

Cringe ass safety psa

[–] drolex@sopuli.xyz 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

"Technology" aka portable fence

[–] Ice@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago

I mean, yeah. A lot of innovations in safety is really just stupidly simple things that we learned the hard way (someone being hurt).

The stupid part however isn't how simple these things are, but rather how hard it is to get through even the most basic changes.

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

A stone wheel is "technology".

[–] MolochHorridus@piefed.social 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I’ve never seen those guards in Finland, which is part of the E.U.

[–] Evil_Shrubbery@thelemmy.club 24 points 1 day ago (1 children)

EU has a lot of fragmented (by country) road laws.

But guards/skirts are usually integrated into the design, not third-party add-ons.

Random examples:

That looks clean

Trucks will always be needed. Trains can't go everywhere.

Also, the passenger-train utopia we both want would require lighter-duty high-speed rail, which freight trains wouldn't be able to operate on

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago

Not boxcars, no. But up to the 50s we had electric rail in my area that handled panel-van kind of packages from station to station, via shipping cars hooked to the same train as passengers.

Then pneumatic tires and gasoline-powered buses got popular and they killed electric rail. We still haven't the reach, speed, or versatility as we had then, since buses need to fight traffic against cars.
