But now, after nearly 20 months of secrecy, the State Department has finally declassified its full guidelines for ‘adjudicating’ sex markers on passports, and unfortunately, it’s even worse than was previously believed. The policy in question, which is codified as Section 403.3 of Volume 8 of the Foreign Affairs Manual and is simply titled ‘Sex Markers,’ is divided into four subsections: Summary, Procedures, Eligibility for a Fully Valid Passport or Passport Card, and Indicators of a Prior Change to Sex Marker.

My sex is F on my driver's license, birth certificate, blood tests, basic inspection of my face, basic inspection of my genitals, etc, but they'd force my passport to say otherwise. Sex marker changes on passports weren't even a recent thing, though they were really easy under Biden. I'm very grateful I got mine changed and renewed then.

Spending money specifically to hurt citizens with no benefit to anyone. What a great government

The president is a fucking CHILD RAPIST. A disgusting PoS conman who raped children. Children!

And this shit is what they are investigating???

The child rapist gets to decide investigation priorities, unfortunately.

For a people who yell "family values," they sure are into other people's genitals.

[–] ms_lane@lemmy.world 4 points 13 hours ago

What they mean is 'Your Family will follow our values, or else'

It's really kind of baffling just how bonkers the right wing has gone over transgender issues. I mean, not really baffling - you pick a random scapegoat and hammer away, that's how authoritarianism works. But why transgender? So weird. I guess it's a bit easier because of how humans often get excessively wound up about sexuality, just look at basically every religion ever.

Because we have a history of being seen/treated as sex objects and objects of ridicule. Authoritarians are super weird about sex, especially since we can trigger deep insecurities when people find us attractive. Multiple far right personalities have been caught watching trans porn (such as Alex Jones and Nick Fuentes) and one (Steven Crowder) has been accused of being a chaser (general term for body type fetishists, particularly ones who aren't respectful of the people with those bodies).

And so here we come in, demanding to be treated as fellow humans and given respect and legal protections and all that (especially so we're no longer economically pressured into sex work) and right wingers are thinking of us as anything from "the joke from Ace Ventura" to "the prostitute nobody can ever find out I hire". This makes it easier to treat our very existence in public as obscene and with that obscenity, disgust and anger. And now we're demanding people stop making fun of us, that we have opportunities to be their bosses, that they change how they refer to us…

There's also a lot to be said about how we make simple things in their eyes like gender into something more complicated and how by challenging their models of parts the world that seem basic and foundational some people just get angry. That's where a lot of the "common sense" transphobia comes from.

Oh also because enough people feel this way it doesn't matter if everyone does, some will be convinced to be angry because people they generally agree with are angry (especially friends and preachers), and others will see it as a winning issue upon which to piggyback the things they actually care about like lower taxes or increased power for the rich.

At least that's my read on it as a trans woman who's thought a lot about this in the past decade. I think the best things we can do to combat it is to normalize our existence as equals and to normalize support of us. Especially in non-political-coded ways. But also by framing support for us in terms of generally popular ideological goals, like the freedom to live the way you want, or small/unobtrusive government not thinking it knows better than the passport holder how to identify their gender.

[–] BeerStainedBunny@lemmy.blahaj.zone 36 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Because there are so few of us so it's easy to get away with and also transphobes prey on people's insecurities

[–] TRAHR@quokk.au 19 points 23 hours ago

Knowing a minority helps you realise they are no different to you. The smaller the minority the less chance people will have to interact with members of it.

Republicans were already wound up about sexuality, it unfortunately makes sense

[–] ch00f@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Probably because homosexuality isn't the minority it used to be and trans people are another secret minority that makes them spookier.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

Even worse we can "make them gay" some of us even have the nerve to reject them after doing so

I love having a government run by a bunch of weirdo pederasts, so much fun.

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I think that "pedarast" is the word you're looking for.

so much time, money, and energy is devoted to upholding traditional hierarchies like gender essentialism.

i'm proud to be trans. fuck these rigid ideologies. they will inevitably crack, break, and crumble.

Doing the important work and all that...

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 20 points 1 day ago

Shit like this is why I got mine renewed before his second term (and why I initially got my passport before his first term). If you want it you’ll have to take it from me when I flee the country.

[–] anon_8675309@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

Investigate the President.
