Have a look at Mariahilferstraße in Vienna. Very similar debate. The FPÖ wants to destroy the much nicer partially pedestrian, partially shared space street to this day even though they reach increasingly only people who don't even know it with stuff like that. But to most people who have been there in the years since the transformation, going back to that car hell with too little space for pedestrians is crazy talk.
What I find the most fascinating is how the Mariahilferstraße has turned into a crystallisation core for making side streets also shared space/pedestrian zones or simply much nicer places to be as well. That is the complete opposite of what the opponents claimed, that closing the one street will make everything around it an even worse traffic hell hole.
