Today broke grey and raw for New Democrats here in BC: last night was a body blow.

This morning I’m sending solidarity and care to all the progressive organizers - within and beyond electoral politics - who have worked tirelessly over so many years in this province.

It is thanks to your unending effort that we have won and defended all our social gains: queer and disability rights, Indigenous rights, childcare and public health, working conditions and unionization, universal public services and more.

None of these victories came without struggle. And that struggle must continue now, to protect them in every way we can.

But not today. Today is a day to feel all the feelings, find comfort and get some rest.

Tomorrow we rise to fight again.

I hope that they can find a more appropriate leader who is better aligned with the federal NDP. I really like Avi but had to drop my membership because I did not want to give Eby any further support.

BCNDP shot themselves in the foot and need to move left further. At best they were centrist liberals when it came to workers interests and progressive liberals on social topics. They lost their appeal to the proletariat a long time ago.

Eby called for a snap election (and probably with support and push of his caucus) for absolutely no reason. They had nothing worthwhile on the table that they wanted to push so badly which needed a majority. And snap elections have failed several times in Canada's history.

I think they lost support when people started fearing they would loose their homes. No one can argue if that was true or not but people still feared it.

No one can argue if that was true or not

It is really pretty straightforward to argue that it is not true

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

But Eby himself purposely conflated it with the Gaaxtala case to scare people and make them think it could be true. Because Eby sucks.

Yes he contributed to the issue because he chose to validate unfounded fear-mongering, he didn't want to spend his dwindling political capital on doing the morally right thing to do.

Doesn't change the fact that it's a pretty straightforward case to understand. The problem is not a lack of information, it's an active misinformation campaign that makes the any explanation fall into infertile grounds.

I don't know what you're referencing about people losing their homes.

"this will be a wake up call for the NDP"

Dear reader if I had a nickle for every "NDP Wake up call" I could buy a months worth of double doubles from tims.

No, it won't be a wake up call. it's hard to wake a corpse. the worst thing that happened to that party was the death of Jack Layton and they've never been able to recover from it. There's zero leadership. and the best bet is Layton's partner, Olivia Chow, who herself is barely scraping by in the polls for her Mayoral re-election in Toronto.

Don't get me wrong I want the NDP to do well, I want them to win, I just wish they could sort their shit out and have a strong intelligent leader.

I think Avi Lewis is doing a good job for the fed NDP so far.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

But not enough to be actually elected to Parliament?

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

E: I didn't downvote.

I don't think electing him to parl is important at this point. I think campaigning and building a grassroots structure within the party is much more important. This party should no longer be another traditional party with different bullet points on its web site and a different talking head. It should be a movement with a lot of organized people all over Canada that educate, campaign, knock on doors, fundraise and produce the bullet points on the web site and the talking head. If we can get to that point the party would be much more robust, not dependent on a particular leader, wouldn't collapse when a good leader's gone, could more easily replace a bad leader, etc. I think Lewis is working towards that goal. I see him being elected MP as robbing him from time and resources that could be used towards building up the party. At least for the time being. I think he should run when enough of the work is done so that his election is a formality with little uncertainty for success. I don't think we're there yet.

A reminder for anyone in Toronto

TODAY IS THE LAST DAY TO VOTE and we absolutely cannot let Cuck Cuckford win. He wants to fucking privatize our WATER and sell it to AI data centers. Just imagine how much worse Billy Bishop and Ontario Place will get with Doug Dougford's cock puppet in charge.

Polls are open until 8. Not voting (if legally able to) is surrender.

GO FUCKING VOTE

If you live in the 6ix, vote option 9

Brad Brad Ford - it's in the name.

[–] tempest@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

Monied interests make sure that they'll never see that leader. The NDP are controlled opposition at best. Which sucks because they're barely even left wing with their ideas.

[–] DriftingLynx@lemmy.ca 23 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Kinda neglects mentioning the loss was self-inflicted.

[–] Blisterexe@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 day ago

He's already been accused of being divisive, probably doesn't want to fan those flames.

[–] TheFeatureCreature@lemmy.ca 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Nah. Eby didn’t give us a conservative majority government. The voters did.

The snap election was a dumb move but our new government was picked by the electorate, not Eby or the NDP.

[–] unknownuserunknownlocation@kbin.earth 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

A dumb move is an understatement. It was political opportunism at its ugliest. It was the exact opposite of fair, coming from a party that is in large part about fairness. Had the conservatives done this the NDP would have been screaming bloody murder, and rightly so. Yes, the electorate elected the new government. But the NDP really, really provoked it, so they take a large part of the blame.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It was political opportunism

And that, in large part, is what the electorate rejected.

It wouldn't matter which party caused an unnecessarily early election if they did it for such blatantly opportunistic reasons. They'd still get punished at the polls.

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Not to mention that he did it with such strategically poor timing as immediately after municipal elections when voters were already burned out. This set a record for lowest turnout.

[–] Blisterexe@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 day ago

First line is strangely poetic, you can tell he used to be a writer.

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 day ago

Good statement.

BC just stepped into the void. But anyway . . . the new premier looks pretty sturdy. Right?

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic but no... That whole party is a fucking mess.
