Here's everything we know about it so far:

  • It will use ActivityPub.
  • It will be a side app of Instagram.
  • It will most likely be called Threads.
  • Your Instagram verification status will transfer over.
  • There will be easy discovery tools in place: Your Instagram followers will be able to follow you on Threads as well (they won't transfer over automatically).

What do you think?

Nope I'm done with corporate-controlled social media.

[–] Zagaroth@beehaw.org 8 points 1 year ago

Oh hell no. I never liked facebook much to begin with, and started despising it several years ago. I want nothing to do with anything involving Meta.

[–] Moonrise2473@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 year ago

Your Instagram verification status will transfer over.

Cool! So everyone can know that i have $15 in disposable income every month and that i paid to dox myself

Hard pass. Meta doesn't need any more of my data.

[–] open_world@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

If given a choice between Mastodon (with all its flaws) and anything by Meta, I would always choose Mastodon.

Hell no. I can't think of any company I trust less than Meta/Facebook.

Short answer: No.
Long answer: Nooooooooooooooo.

Not likely in the slightest.

Hard pass. The only reason I use Meta at all is because they acquired Instagram, and I'm barely on there as it is (but my family members are).

[–] honk@feddit.de 7 points 1 year ago

My take on this:

If it didn't support ActivityPub: Why would I? I could just use twitter. If it does support ActivityPub: Why wouldn't I just use Mastodon that is ad free and doesn't try to invade my privacy?

[–] lunasloth@beehaw.org 7 points 1 year ago

No interest; I won't be using anything by Meta. If the servers I'm on don't defederate from them, I'll just block the domain.

[–] TranceReduction@beehaw.org 7 points 1 year ago

Absolutely not. I'm fine sticking with Mastodon. Fuck Meta.

[–] ericflo@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Actually, maybe! If it really is ActivityPub compliant.

No to anything by Meta/Facebook. The platform that refused to show me what I subscribed to and tried to constantly jam pointless political rubbish down my throat, then effectively disabled my account when I removed my data.

I'm also blocking them if they appear in my Mastodon feed.

[–] clb92@kbin.social 7 points 1 year ago

Will you join?

If it's ActivityPub and federated, surely I won't have to?

[–] shakesbeare@beehaw.org 7 points 1 year ago

It will use ActivityPub. Doesn't this mean I can interact with the entire ecosystem without ever touching their app (ie from Mastodon or any of them)? Or have I misunderstood the systems in place here?

[–] OrthoStice@feddit.it 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Hell no. Fuck Meta and fuck Mark Zuckerberg.

[–] harbo@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

No thanks, I’ll stick with mastodon. But if Meta’s version is enabled on the fediverse then I welcome it

[–] ipha@beehaw.org 6 points 1 year ago

I'm not sure who I trust less to run a social platform -- muskrat or bookface.

[–] Melody@lemmy.one 6 points 1 year ago

Hard No.

In fact I'd expect a large number of fediverse instances to defederate or silence the instance so that users who do not want to be bothered by it will not be bothered.

[–] poiy@kbin.social 6 points 1 year ago

Absolutely not, the decline of online communication really started to go berserk with Facebook. Now it’s all just extremists that can’t handle criticism. F zuckerberg

[–] Stoneblackdog@beehaw.org 6 points 1 year ago

Isn't Facebook already like Twitter but for older people?

[–] spdrmx@beehaw.org 6 points 1 year ago

Good thing about it is that since it will use ActivityPub, all fediverse instances can restrict it and they'll lose a big chunk of possible content.

[–] Steeve@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 year ago

Unpopular opinion: yeah, probably. Facebook and Instagram have come a long way in tackling misinformation and hate speech since 2016. Obviously they aren't perfect, but now that Twitter is pushing that shit into my recommendations I want updates from my feed without having to support Twitter.

That being said I've never interacted with Twitter much, only used it for updates, so it's not like Meta will get anything from my limited personal data.

[–] GreyCat134@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

No, but it will be funny to watch Elon’s reaction when it launches.

[–] heyfluxay@midwest.social 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Nah, I’m happy with the apub apps I’m already using.

Big tech can’t always do things better. I’ve had access to BlueSky for a couple weeks now and IMO, it sucks.

I’d rather stick with Masto and Lemmy.

Thats a big FUCK NO

[–] noodlejetski@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

no, and I hope the Fediverse will defederate from them. judging by the discussion I've seen so far though, it's not likely to happen.

No interest whatsoever. I don't like Facebook (I refuse to call them meta) or any of it's subsidiaries. Mastodon works great for my Twitter like needs.

I do hope that most instances block them though, for obvious privacy reasons but also because it would be hilarious as it would basically invalidate one of the major selling points of the ActivityPub protocol for them.

Really hard to trust Meta. They could help advance ActivityPub. Or maybe they go full Microsoft Embrace Extend Extinguish and damage the Fediverse. Or it could be benign. Look at XMPP where it was adopted by big companies but they eventually stopped federating and down the line replaced it with their own proprietary protocols.

[–] AGTMADCAT@infosec.pub 5 points 1 year ago

Oh gods no, that's one of the only companies who would make an even more toxic mess of a platform. I'll stick with the fediverse, thanks.

[–] BeardedSingleMalt@beehaw.org 5 points 1 year ago

Since I don't have FB, IG nor twitter...nope.

[–] Glunkbor@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago

Just think of how Facebook has ruined Instagram and has made it basically unusable. Unless you enjoy to get spammed with ads, never see what people you follow post, and get tons of reels that you never cared about in the first place. Never in my life will I ever use or buy anything from Meta and that android Zuckerborg.

[–] nogooduser@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

I don’t really get Twitter so I won’t but even if I did I would choose a Mastadon instance over a Meta product.

[–] hellothisisdog@yiffit.net 5 points 1 year ago (6 children)

helllllllllllll no. long live the fediverse 💙

No, in fact I think this would make me less active on Instagram than I was before... And I'm not very active on it.

This is because If can use my mastodon account to communicate with Instagram users, then why do I also need an Instagram account?

I on principle don't delete accounts, I just park them and go inactive.
