I see the option for all, subscribed and local but I can't seem to figure out how to find a list for a different instance

Using a browser (not a phone app) go to the instance's main page and look for the Communities button. That will give you a list of communities. Filtering by Local lists all the communities on that instance.

Here are some examples:
https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/communities
https://sh.itjust.works/communities

Right what I meant was, what if I wanna go see the list of communities on say sh.itjust.works from my lemmy.dbzer0.com account.

From the way you suggest (which is also what i've been doing) you can only see your own local communities while signed in.

Not all mobile apps allow it because it's a little tricky with the Lemmy APIs.

  • Liftoff used to have thia feature but it's discontinued;
  • Summit has added this feature, you can access it by "Community info" -> "Instance info" -> "Communities" when you are on a community on the instance you want to explore;
  • RaccoonForLemmy has it in the "Instance info" sheet tapping the "⋮" button in the top bar when you are on a community of the instance you want to explore;
  • I couldn't find anything similar in Jerboa, Voyager, Thunder and Eternity, don't know about the other ones.

I had this exact question the other day, because I would type in lemmygrad into search and only four communities would come up.
