I mean, yeah, if you're playing media, it's going to assume that's what you want to identify and will pull from that source, first. Why activate the mic if you don't need it to?

Okay, what can the average user do to ensure this, then?
They're harder to find, for sure. Especially if you want a large screen.
When I was shopping around a few years ago, the only 65" TV I could find without smart features was a Sceptre, which is Walmart's electronics brand. Speakers so bad that I had to buy a sound bar, and the display isn't that great, but it gets the job done and I don't need to worry about it being an attack vector.
It is literally made up as it suits them.
This started literally thousands of years ago.
For some reason, this reminds me of the origin of the term "footage", when referring to filming something. In ye olden days, film was measured in feet. So to capture video on film, you were using up a certain amount of footage/length of film.
Nah, the design specs for phones like this are done years in advance.
And they actively fought against it for as long as they could, tooth and nail.
They are 100% trained on bodies laying prone on the ground.
These cars won't even drive over a fire hose laid out across the road (this was literally a test we did regularly when I worked on Waymo's SDCs). They definitely won't drive over a person (intentionally).
Inertia is a factor here. Cars can't stop on a dime. By the time the pedestrian was knocked in front of the SDC, there was likely not enough time to have possibly avoided hitting her, just due to physics.
Without knowing what type of vehicle the first car was, it's hard to say how this played out. If it was a van or truck or something else that could've easily obstructed Cruise's LIDAR system or if the other vehicle stopped ahead of the crosswalk line, the SDC would've had little to no way of knowing that there was anybody in the crosswalk.
Can't know for sure unless Cruise releases the video to the public, which they're unlikely to do until the police do their investigation.
Any alternative that hopes to last will need to be a paid service.
At which point, it's not really an alternative at all anymore.
