That's the thing, there are particles there, just very few. Temperature is measuring how fast the particles move, and they move pretty fast in space. We feel heat based on how much energy the particles transfer to us, but because there's so few particles, it would feel cold.
This is the same reason why getting rid of heat is so hard in space. The best ways of cooling here on earth involve giving those particles the energy we don't want, but because there's so few in space, conventional cooling is nearly impossible.

You guys should check out Far Far West, they're having a Playtest that ends on the 10th

It has elements from both deep rock and helldivers, with an open map and scattered objectives throughout. You play as a robot cowboy spellcaster fighting undead criptids. They say it's pre-alpha but it's wayyyy to polished for me to believe that, it almost feels like it's ready to ship
(I am not affiliated with the game other than really enjoying what I've played. Its a team of 4 developers and im super excited to see what they do with it)
